Remington 700 5R in .308 (I took the 300 Win Mag back, for several reasons)
My eyesight isn't what it used to be.
I am very new to precision rifles and also to long range shooting. For years, my shooting consisted of killing Bambi every year and shooting at the 1-300 yard range we have here locally. Usually with AR15 or pistols. Rifle consisted of zero in my deer rifle (.308/243,270, etc) a few months before deer season.
So, I guess my question is, what magnification do I really need for long range (800-1000 yards) assuming I find someplace to shoot that far and I learn to shoot well enough to hit the paper at that range.
I would prefer the FFP, as I will assume (you know what happens when you do that) that since I will almost always be alone, I will have to call my own shots and ranges.
Or if I go with SFP, I can get more mag for less money. Also, NF only has the one FFP scope and it is 5-15X only.
If I go with the SFP, at what mag do NF callibrate their reticles?
Now the Leupold FFP scopes have more mag options, but it seems, from reading posts here for a while, that their quality isn't what it used to be?
Or I can keep saving my cash and maybe find a USO used for sale, here or elsewhere.
I know the 308 doesn't have the legs that the 300 winmag does. I also am not intending to do any long range competitive shooting. This is just for long range deer hunting and paper punching and setting off the little tubes of tannerite at 3-400 yards. I love to watch things go boom.
Thanks
Patrick
