I need reviews on my Springfield M1a

Shes has a Millett 6x24x56 Tactical scope- not bad

Factory moss breakup camo

all else is factory.

These rings are way to high. Please someone tell me where to go from here.

How do I get pics on here?

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

The M1A is notoriously difficult to scope. You will need some way of getting a good cheek weld (instead of a chin-weld) on the stock to look through your scope. There are many choices ranging from stock systems with adjustable combs, to adjustable comb retrofit kits, to stock pads, to ingenuity-duct-tape-and-foam.

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

I carried the M14 in combat and loved it.

I owned the M1A and come to recognize that its best place is as a battle rifle. It was never intended to be accurate enough or reliable enough to shoot with the kind of precision we expect from our bolt guns.

It hates scope mounts and does its level best to destroy them. The wooden stock can be bedded, and generally, the first time it gets wet, the bedding becomes a joke.

It shoots the 7.62x51 NATO/.308 Win, which are in fact different cartridges, neither of which is anything but a piss-poor compromise that rejects the .30-'06 for being the exquisite chambering is has always been.

I spent years acquiring wisdom and expertise about the M1A; but the ultimate wisdom is that as a replacement for the Garand, it never ran as any more than a distant second. Neither is anywhere near being its best with a scope attached.

If you want to shoot .30 caliber at any significantly longer distance with ease and precision, get yourself a .30-'06. I have, and now own no .308's. For the .308 case capacity, I adopted the .260. If I wanted to improve on the .30-'06, I'd go with the .280 Rem. Actually, I did. But I also kept my .30-'06's.

If you like precison shooting, use a bolt gun.

Trade your M1A in on a Garand. Maybe you'll even thank me, but...

The foregoing is strictly a set of opinions...

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

where to go? Get a different stock, a cheek piece...the wrap around kind or modify your stock with an adjustable cheek piece. The strap-on type of cheek piece is probably good enough

You'll want the trigger worked on, probably sucks, if you don't change the stock, have the one you've got bedded if it isn't already.

Find a quality mount...the quick disconnect sucks.

Take it out and have fun with it. If you can't group it, could be the gun or could be the scope mount...hence pull the scope and use the open sights.

When I had my m14 (armscorp NM) I could regularly keep .5 to 1MOA, no problem...oh, open sights prone, Sorry, this isn't a bench gun.

there is a tremendous amount of tuning that can be done to the standard m14, barrel, gas port,op rod, guide, bolt, sights,

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

Forget the M1a. I have.

The Armalite AR-10 with A3/A4 receiver has integral picatinny rail so scoping the rifle is simple and trouble-free. AR-10 can deliver boltgun accuracy, possibly better. No stocking problems, just use a decent float-tube w/o the quadrail garbage.

Lots of options. Easy to install a match trigger. Easy to gunsmith and swap barrels or buy a spare upper or two. Most AR-15 parts interchange in the lower receiver. No comparison to the Garand.

Buy an AR-10T in .260rem if you really want to investigate longrange performance, or study what Noveske, GA Precision, and other primo builders are producing, then buy or build your own...

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

Hopefully in the next 2-3 years, after I have got situated in my new LE career, I can finally go to one of those Snipershide shoots. I'd be really interested to find all these AR10's that simple blow my M21 clear out of the water with unparalleled accuracy. Do they really exist? So far just on the internet.

The M1a Rifle takes dedication and money. There isn't a single one coming out of anywhere that is the very best it could be. That isn't something you just go and buy. The M1a require all or nothing to get them to that level.

The foam w/duct tape is the way to go for cheek pieces. Tape each piece individually on until it's high enough for you (reticle should be centered on your pupil if someone looked through the objective lense with your natural cheek weld). I've had problems with screw in cheek pieces like the ones that come on McMillan stocks. They slide down over time. Just make sure the duct tape completely covers all the foam so water doesn't get in it. Green duct tape is preferred so your stock won't be shiny silver.

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

I agree with M21guy. My M21 is accurate enough. Is it bolt gun accurate, no, not even close, but if I want bolt gun accuracy, I'll get one.

As far as the scope goes, if mine wasn't an M21 with the factory check riser in the stock, I'd probably be more willing to shoot with irons.

YMMV

Re: I need Reviews on my M1a

I have a M21 with the kreiger barrel. I have a Jeff Allen stock being built for it. The rifle is topped off with a USO 3.2X 17 scope. It shoots fairly accurate too.
