I've been reading my butt off for about 3 weeks on trying to decide what is the best scope for me. I am shooting an AR I built with a 24" Sabre 1:8 heavy bench barrel in .223. I originally mounted a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x scope on it, and it has been a good rifle for target shooting, and hunting for the past year. However, now that I have dialed in my hand loads the accuracy of the rifle is far superior to the optics, primarily my lack of magnification. I want to take it out a bit further for target shooting, and pushing my hand loads better. I have shot .223 out to 1000 yards, however most of my shooting will be between 100-500 yards. So, what I want for my new scope is the following:

High magnification - ~24x
Zeroing Turrets - preferably 1/4" MOA or faster
Internal adjustment - more than 40moa due to .223 drop rates

I'm open to using a canted base if necessary. Originally I had settled on a Nikon Monarch 6-24x50 BDC - however I was convinced by others to look into the Bushnell 4200 Elite 6-24x50 30mm tube. So I pulled the trigger and had one set aside for me. I showed up at SWFA to pick it up, and they had sold it, and told me I was SOL basically - thanks SWFA. Anyways - now that I can't find that scope anywhere for a reasonable price now that Bushnell has killed the 4200 line and released their new one, I have some time it would seem to make sure I'm making the right choice for optics. My budget is right around $600, but I can flex it if the value is there.

I appreciate any help you guys can give me. First post on the site, and it looks like you guys know your stuff.

Thanks Jack. I did see midway had the scope, however SWFA had it for $480.00 last week, as did a few other retailers - apparently during the time I was deciding what to buy

I have a RRA 24" Varminter that wears a Leupold 6.5-20 VXIII and a CZ HB 223 that wears a Vortex Viper 6.5-20. Both scopes have 30mm tubes and a life time warranty. I like them both but if I needed another I would get the Vortex. It is nearly the equal of the Leupold at less than half the price.

does it have to be variable power? if using for just target
shooting the super sniper 20x i have for the money is hard to beat. the turrets are very solid and with 1/4 click values the movement is exact. i use mine for multi distance matches where dialing is critical and it has worked flawless. it in no way has the optics of my ziess 6.5x20 but for the money it is a great scope.my shooting buddy has a ss in 16x and loves it also. there are a lot of optics out there amd nikon monarchs is also hard to beat. just my opinion
