How hard is this? Should I send it in or do it myself? I do most everything myself, but am I missing something?

Did you do anything to provide a starting location for the teeth of the nut, or did you just let those sink into the fiberglass when the nut was tightened?

I let the teeth of the nuts settle into the filler, a little glue will help the stay put should you remove the rail, I assume your stock has a sling stud/bipod stud take a look from the barrel channel to see what I mean, and if your stock has two studs measure them you might get lucky and find the spacing is perfect for a rail.
I suggest you buy the rail from Atlas as they have a slot that will let you mount it if you do already have two sling studs. Sometimes you just get lucky!
