So I'm looking to get a scope that is roughly mil/mil 5-25x with an objective size of around 56-58mm.

It seems the only high end candidates are USO, S&B, and Premier.

I have never personally handled any of these scopes, so I have no idea which knobs I would prefer. If one were to not care about weight/length, it seems the only remaining factors would be reticle and clarity/resolution. Durability seems to be of no concern to any of these quality scopes.

I honestly don't seem to get/like the Gen-2 XR of the Premier. (Don't like the .5mils being hashes with the 1mils being smaller dots) The S&B's P4 Fine reticle seems to get the job done, even tho it seems kind of basic. I really like the mil-scale gap reticle option of USO.

Now then... is there really that big a difference in clarity/resolution as people make it out to be? I've read the differences to be like night and day... while others can't notice anything different.

Re: I really need help narrowing down my choices.

I've used a Gen-II in my Leupold and liked how the 5mil hash marks went out comepletely along the entire length of the thick stadia instead of stopping at the 5mil mark. Other than that I now have the MPR in my SN-3 and that is now my personal favorite. Makes mil-ranging and correcting your shots from impacts a breeze. The .2mil and .3mil resolution is a big help. I would seriously consider the MPR unless you are already 100% sold on something else.

Edited to add: I also like the hash marks of the MPR over the mildots of the Gen-II. Just makes things a little easier. find the edge of this line | to this line | is much easier than finding the middle of this circle O to the middle of this circle O....

Ya, I noticed and am considering that MPR reticle too. Just kind of shocking to me that only USO has a reticle that have hash marks at anything less than 0.5mil intervals.

The only thing that worries me about USO is that I've seen several comparison reviews and gotten several PMs about how easily noticeable the difference in clarity/resolution is. I've been trying to take the advice of people who own both brands, but I'm still not sure what is true lol.

Re: I really need help narrowing down my choices.

If you can try and view the optics you are considering side by side before you buy. As an owner of 2 USO scopes I can say that they are of fantastic build quality and toughness, they have great reticles (I like GAP), great knobs and their CS is second to none.

I will say that I did notice the glass quality of my SN3 3.2-17x44 seemed better than the 1.8-10x44 I had. One of the issues some have raised about USO is that the glass quality can be inconsistent from scope to scope.

If you find a USO SN3 with their normal level of awesome glass and you don't need more magnification buy it :)

+1 on getting behind the optics that you mentioned. When you get up in that price range, everything will offer something a little different but not by much. Here is my list of the scopes i would choose and why. I will say that the scopes i mention i have owned or used alot.

PH 5-25, my only complaint is the clicks on the knobs are to close together. The reason this is at the top of my list, it has the features that i wanted/needed at the best price of the 3

NF F1, great scope loved it i havent owned the F1 but had a NXS and it was the shit, got rid of it because the deal i was offered would have been dumb for me to turn down.

US Optics, great scope with the full custimization options. See a few have problems, but not enough to turn me away from them. Ill get another on one day

S&B SSDS, i used this scope a shit ton on our M40A3s, and it was the bottom of my list. THere is a certain point where price of an optic starts to have very little gains in performance. Right now i think S&B is a little high, they are good scopes just not my thing. Think of the price and the features you get on the SB vs the USO/Premier. It is kind of a diminishing return. But in the end no one here is going to buy the scope for you so its on you. But i would suggest you at least look through a couple before you buy

Re: I really need help narrowing down my choices.

I've come to like USO, they have 5+/- different knob options on both the elevation and windage to choose from, in both MOA and 1/10Mil.
Plus, when you order a USO you build it exactly the way you want it, and send the order in, they send back a conformation invoice, and you sign off and they build it. Lifetime warranty.
And, they have 6 or 7 reticle designs to choose from, you really can't beat USO in flexibility.

Re: I really need help narrowing down my choices.

Sigh... I wish people posted behind the scope pictures using these different scopes... BUT were placed in the same rest/vice and were aimed at the same object with the same magnification. Seems like it'd be a simple way to show what differences there even are.

On a side note... anybody with pictures through a USO with MPR reticle?
