I take a run at the Mk 262

I finally thought I could see about making my own Mk262 mod 1 ammo, as everyone thinks it's the cats ass.

I knocked some down and from my naked eye observation, and what I had on hand, it looked like 2520 to me, no shine like the 844/H335 or BL(c)2/, measurement of the case was 2.250 OAL, no crimp into the cannelure.

Pulled two cases and the combined was 51.1 grains. It was solidly packed into the case and came out in clumps.

This is just some basic info that I know has been covered before, but it's my time and if you want the info, cool.

I took my run at it with pulldown 846, because I think that much 844 would shred my best match AR, and that was not my intention, and I think the double base powders of old are pretty cool to work with.

My test platform was an out of the box Rock River A4 NM, all I've done to it was swap out the A2 flash hider for a Vltor unit and slap a 20 buck surplus sling on it.

I shot just three shots of the 262 ammo to get a speed at 100, and I know the stuff shoots well, but I was kinda happy with the first three shots of the day. Gun on a rest and a sandbag in the back.

A shade under an inch, 2892, 2873,2879. Ball powder sucks, my ass. And it's about 95 or so here when I started, it's Tucson after all.

I ran a ladder from 22.0 to 26 of pulldown 846 from the guys at Hi-Tech, (those dudes rock if your a cheap bastard like me), with 75BTHP Hornady, in LC mixed up brass and wolf SRM primers.

I would normally shoot the cheap ass 75's from widener's, but the UPS guys got lost this week and all I had was Hornady's. I'm well aware that the original bullet was a 77 SMK with a caanellure, but that is for the jet set crowd. I load by the bucket, not the box, so cost is what I'm after.

22.0 was a little too slow, and the verticle stringing ( along with a shitty shooter) set that at 1.68 inches, but the speed was promising to start.

2666, 2699, 2704, 2614, 2677. ES of 90, not so good.

Clicked up four and tried 22.5 and the shit started to come together nicely, under 3/4 MOA. And I'm no shooter.

Speeds were 2721, 2699, 2710, 2743, 2688. Looks like and ES of 55, doable for battle, but not really a 600 yard load.

Yet.

Doesn't make sense, but the primers started to flatten a little here, more later.

Tried 23.0 next,

Just a hair shy of 3/4, speed is working out perfect.

2743, 2737, 2726, 2749, 2772. ES of 46. Remember this is a gas gun, a factory gun, and I'm close to 3/4 still.

To 23.5 we go.....

This doesn't look so good, but I get happy here, shouldn't but I do.

I ran out of my regular targets I shoot at 100 and had to shoot some of the regular 100 high power targets. My front post doesn't sit well with that for some reason, or my eyes suck, whatever.

The speeds were as follows, 2801, 2772, 2783, 2801, 2812. ES of 40. This is my load, although I'm still shy of the 262 load, I'm happy.

24 grains starts to get iffy....

Speeds, 2849, 2836, 2904, 2867, 2879. Accuracy goes to shit, primers are flat, no good, but I had to try. I think I'm going to 26 grains.....

Next to 24.5...

Speeds of 2930, 2930, 2898, 2936, 2930.

Third one blew out the primer, otherwise the ES here would've been about 15 in my opinion. It's over a hundred outside by now, my ammo is in the shade but my gun is hot, I'm hot, it's all hot.

But the shit sucks on paper.

And shooting the 25, 25.5, and 26 loads, not even.

Next time i'll load up some 2520, just for shits and giggles.

Weird thing is, the primers were flat on the 22.5 and 23.5 loads, but not the 23.0 load.

This information is just something I ran across in my day, use at your discretion.

Here's the raw data......

PS

The 60 VMax load was run off of my 1050, just for a screwin around load, came in under an inch, I'm gonna load a shitload and have fun with those.

Re: I take a run at the Mk 262

i like the time and effort you put into this i have a buddy with a shit load of this powder and think i mite be getting some this will be reall helpful when i start load it up
thanks

Re: I take a run at the Mk 262

Nice write up. Curious how much the 846 is going for now days and where's the best place to buy it?

Re: I take a run at the Mk 262

I get mine from Dan over at Hi tech in St Louis, I think last time it was a little over 12 a lb shipped when I bought four jugs, as he covers the haz when you do that,

BCP.
I haven't really looked into anything but what i put to paper today, some folks say BlackHills is friendly with the guys at Western Powder, I just didn't think what I pulled from the case had the flattened disc appearance of TAC.

And when I test 2520 I think I'll find I run right with the 262 load, as my current load is 24.8 of 2520 behind any 75 and it'll run in the mid 28's from a decent service rifle.

Next I'm gonna test some foolin around 110 frangible 30 cals I found.

Cheap of course.
