I want a Remington 700 again.

I joined this forum earlier this year when I was looking to get a firearm. I wanted a 700, but couldn't afford it.

So I got an AR15 and shot the hell out of it and loved it. Unfortunately I had to sell it to help pay for a headstone for my father.

Well fast forward a few months and I want another rifle, but this time I think I will go with a R700 in .308.

A long range bolt action rifle seems like it would be better for me because I will be able to shoot it more. The ammo is more pricey than .223, but I wont shoot as much of it at a time. And I think Ill be able to have more fun with long range.

So now Im trying to figure out what to get. Depending on howm uch my 4-wheeler sells for, Ill probably be able to spend maybe $1300 tops. I know thats not a lot, but I think it should be a good starting point for me.

So any ideas for a build in that range?

Thanks,
Coby

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

For 1300 bucks, you could get a SPS tactical (1-12 model) for about 560, a B&C light tactical stock for about 225, an EGW base for about 50, a set of Burris XTR rings, also about 50, a Falcon 4-14 for 400, or if you wait for them to be on sale a weaver grand slam tactical from Midwayusa for 300. If you go with the Weaver on sale, that leaves you a little more than 100 bucks for a hariis bipod.

OR

Savage 10 PC with 5r rifling, no new stock needed and it comes out to almost exactly the same price.

Yeah, Ill keep an eye on that. But I wont have the money for a bout 2 weeks so I dont want to get too excited about something used.

That sounds like a damn good idea.

Yeah, thats probably the direction Ill go. But keeping my options open for a couple weeks cant hurt I guess.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

I don't know if you've had a chance to look through the Falcon Scopes, but they're hard to beat for the money. I have an SS and a Falcon and the Falcon's glass clarity is far superior. That may be a fluke, but it's been true for me.

Im actually really liking that Savage. So its on par with a 700?

It's Falcon Optics. They're kinda hard to find, but www.mitchellordnance.com has them in stock. That's where I got both of mine and he was super helpful.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

I have both Remy and Savage.. actually 4 Savage. The great thing I find about the Savage is I can most any work I want on them myself. The Remy is also great.. but if you need anything done to it prepare to pay and send it out to a gunsmith. Not that it's bad b/c those guys can do some awesome things. But I like to be able to swap out a new barrel at home if it hits my fancy. Both great options.. you can't go wrong.

As of late the argument is if Remington is on par with the Savage. I shot my basic .308 Model 10 in F class competitions out to 1000yds and I would place top 3 with it all the time. Very impressive for an out of the box rifle. You can also get a Savage with an HS or Mcmillan stock if thats the route you want to go. And the accu-trigger is very easily adjustable and I don't know of them ever having any problems. They are also the easiest rifle to modify because you can work on them yourself. I stick with Savage because they just plain work.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Ive bumped my budget up to about $2000.

Contemplating getting the 700 SPS Tactical and putting it in an AICS stock with a Falcon Menace on top.

Or for $2000 for a complete rifle do I have a better option?

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Okay, so I think Ill get the 700 SPS Tac, AICS stock, EGW base, XTR rings, Falcon Menace 4-14, and a Harris bipod.

That leaves me ~$500 for some ammo to start off with, a bag/mat and all the other small stuff Ill need.

Does that sound like it would be a good setup?

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

+1 on the 700, the SS, and the AICS

I was in the same position earlier this year and I cant say enough about the AICS. I love the remington as well, and the SS is hard to beat for the money, although I've never looked through a Falcon

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Ive read a lot of good stuff about FM scopes. Im sure Ill be happy with it. Especially since its only $400.

Im really excited now.

Can you guys recommend a good aftermarket bolt knob for the 700?

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Clamber, all I can say is do it !!

What you want sounds good to me.

In regards to the bolt knob, what i have on mine is a Tac Ops.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Nope, it just attaches to the front stud, really easy to do.

Rem 700 SPS Tac, AICS 1.5, Badger 20MOA base and Rings, SS 16x, Harris 6-9

Cant wait to upgrade to the Atlas and a NF/USO, my wallet is just holding me back.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

I got the bug too. Just bought a sps varmint in 308 and got a sps tactical 223 on layaway. 5r hs precision stock in the mail and boxes of ammo in the garage, no glass yet. As addicting as black rifles, nicotine and anything else.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

Being the indecisive person I am, Im now contemplating a different option.

I was entertaining the idea of an AICS stock, but after thinking about it Im not sure if I need an $800 stock right at first. The only reason I liked the AICS is because of the look and the detachable magazine.

So now Im thinking about:

Remington 700 SPS Tactical - $560
SWFA SS 10x42 - $400
Bell&Carlson Medalist A3 - $220
Wyatts DM - $240
Magazine - $70
Harris Series S - $95
Burris XTR 30mm - $55
EGW 20moa Base - $70
Harris #9 Adapter - $25
Eagle Stock Pack - $30
Eagle Mat/Case - $140

That's the basic shooting setup. I still have to figure out what all other accessories to get.

Re: I want a Remington 700 again.

I think you should stick with the Falcon scope. Fixed power is okay but for the same price you can get all the same features with 4-14 power. I would even say maybe go for the 5-25 power for the extra $50. You'll have a lot more versatility from your scope. This is the scope I'm preparing to get for my newly acquired 700P 300RUM.

Stock choice should be based on what is comfortable. I love the AICS and they fit me well so I do plan on getting one eventually for the 700. If you have it in your budget and you like it, you might as well get it to start with and not buy 2 stocks for this gun. It will save you money in the long run. The B&C is a great stock and I have considered it in my build as well so it's ultimately what fits you best.

Also, you might get Steel base and rings instead of aluminum. Since your not worried about weight, Steel is much stronger than the aluminum and cost is pretty much the same. You can get TPS rings with a Farrell 20MOA base and only spend a few more dollars.
