So i had an sb folding pistol brace i bought for the sp5l that i just cant seem to get my hands on even though i had it preordered a year ago when i bought the brace. So i woke up today and did this. Its not finished yet, i just got everything all fit together and i still need to do some shaping work. But as far as i know there isnt an ar-7 folder. This will go right in a backpack or kayak now. So..... what do you guys think? Be brutally honest please.

On the plus side you no longer have to assemble your AR-7 to use it.

    - It is less backpack friendly than when it was broken down and inside the buttstock
    - An AR-7 is not the kind of weapon anyone should be concerned about rapid deployment
    - Form follows function
    - If you like it, and you think it is practical for your uses - rock on.

I had it swapped out of the floating stock and into a collapsable stock that was pretty rinky dink, think i paid like 80 bucks for it. But this sb has been sitting around being a 200 dollar loss all year. I think its actually smaller folded without the barrel than the floating stock is by itself.

Apparently there is in fact an adapter out there that'll allow the user to retrofit an AR-15-style pistol grip and a SIG folding stock to an AR-7.

Personally I think yours looks ugly as sin but if it works and it's comfortable, looks aren't important. It's not really any worse than the ancient brown sorta-looks-like-wood-but-not-really OG stocks and is probably more comfortable (if not as streamlined) than the sliding wire ones Armalite came out with back in the day.

    whats the overall length?

do you plan to keep it in a bag or stored away?

could always just keep an upper and lower full size in a bag and slap it together real quick when needed.

first would be to have a good side arm immediately available ofc.

Its the same length as it was when the sliding stock was fully shortened.

I didnt do anything non reversible to the rifle by the way. 3 screws and the it comes apart and can be put back in the floating stock or the sliding one. It was more of an excercise in seeing if i could make it fit and fab it into existence. Still i appreciate the honesty.

Personally i think it looks alright. I would put an upright grip on it and call it a day. Like that you will be forced to place your thumb like a precision rifle, but nothing wrong with that.

Im gonna mark it and put it on my mill and shape it the way i want. Itll have plenty of room after a little fitting. Thanks, i honestly didnt think it looked that bad but i did it so conformation bias and all that.

Even Buddly has more self respect and dignity than to be caught dead holding that obamination !
I mean, i still woke up on a sunday and accomplished something. It works, even if its ugly as sin lol. I didnt set out to do something and fail. So no matter what anybody says, i still feel like a winner. Ill probably revert it after i finish milling it out. But the cheek weld is infinitely better than the extendable tube stock.

Right on. I have all but switched to upright or close to it. Magpul k2 is a slim but pretty upright. It would make it look less clunky. But the folder i had on my mp5 and i liked it other than it was “brace short”.

Ive always wanted a small backpacking rifle. Maybe someday. Be cool to get something in like 5.7 or at biggest .223.

So if you are going to use this in a kayak...you've replaced the FLOATING stock that holds everything nice and compact with a shittier "stock" that needs everything to be assembled and no longer floats.

The only benefit to a brace over a real stock is the "pistol" status and the ability to run a shorter barrel....which is not applicable I'm your case

Cant run a scope in the floating stock. I have a 13' predator by ocean kayak. It has plenty of internal storage so it wont get lost, but i learned a long time ago that if you care about it tie it off.

If you are deadset on running a scope it's not a terrible idea then.....although personally I would keep the factory stock and store the scope separately

But since it's already a rifle....something like the MCX stock would look a lot better and be a bit less bulky

Nothing gets your mind off your mother having her cancer come back again, for the third time, while she is going blind with cataracts, like a bunch of people telling you that you birthed a hideous manifestation of an obscenity into the world today.

You should spend more time with your mother and less time posting on the Hide.
Over 1300 posts since March 3rd.
Redeem the time, for the days are evil.

Like i said, i needed something to do and there was only one way to find out. I agree, its a hideous abomination. Maybe yall got a laugh out of it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Not that you know anything about my life or how my time is spent. It was nice talking to other people for awhile. Ill fuck off now. Sorry to have virtually inconvenienced you all with my thoughts. Lol

You are really, honestly, getting your panties in a wad over the best advice you've had today?

The truth is as clear as a bell, but isn't always tolled.

By that do you mean 26" (and then some -- at least 1/4" -- for your safety?)

ATFE has no sense of humor that they are aware of. And even accidentally coming in under the OAL standard can put you in jeopardy. Folding stock adaptation is awesome (and I have a thing for AR-7's). But make sure you take a tape measure and that it is 100 Percent 'outside' the 26" minimum (with a 16" barrel for a rifle) and that means having a safety margin.

Measure twice... assemble once, to steal carpenters term.

I like interesting engineering exercises. But don't let them get outside the legal parameters! We don't need to have enthusiasts and collectors lost to the hobby through mistakes or small errors.

A Ruger 10/22 takedown with the Magpul backpacker stock is a much better idea in my opinion, unless you really need something that floats.
You can toss it in a backpack easily and you can put it together way quicker than the abomination in question.

I'd go with a more compact scope, maybe one with an ao and 1/2 mildots.

Also consider rings that allow you to keep the iron sights, even if the scope needs to be removed to use them.

Also, I'd slick up the internals.

I handled a Sig Cross the other day. I'm not so sure of the quality but I liked the weight and the ability to be super compact.

I think something like that in 6ARC would be fun.
