I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Ok, long story short.

Ordered 500 pcs of Rem 260 brass from Cabelas, they sent me 5 - 100pc bags. 3 from 1 lot, 1 from 1 lot, 1 from another. 500 pcs, 3 different lots.

So, I'm I being overly anal, should I just load and shoot them all and let them all get mixed up. Knowing that I'm probably not good enough to know the difference.

Or...does the same lot make a difference? With wear, brass makeup and composition (stretching and neck tension), etc etc etc. One of the reasons for ordering 500 pieces at a time for me is to get the same lot, if I wanted different lots then I'd order them 100 to 200 pcs at a time.

Do I use them or send them back to be replaced with 500 from the same lot?

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

if you are that "anal".., weigh them and sort by weight, i did that once and kept a +- 2 grains, you will usually have 5 or 6 groups, if done by +-0 you will have over 20 groups. my results were unnoticeable. i now sort by head stamps, i.e., Winchester, R-P, Fed, G.I. BH, most everything else goes into the scrap bucket.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

I never did sort before but did try sorting this last batch and sorted +- 1 grain for the match stuff. I'm not that anal about my reloading but at the last match I did pick up a few targets. Was it my sorting or just having a good day? If that is what will give you more confidence then I'd do it.

I really agree with Piston Pete, at our last practice session I spotted for a fella with mixed brass at the 900 yard line. He was going along fine with misses being a bit left or right then all at once it jumped nearly 4 ft high. The next 2 did the same thing. He got to looking and it was different brass he had mixed in. We kept track after that and there was noticable different in how the differnt brass shot.

Some things make a big difference, other things very little. You have to sort thru them and see what you thinks helps and what is a waste of time.

well send me the brass, and I'll send you a single lot of 500 pieces with 3 firings on it. Seriously... it is Remington brass.

Send it to me, I'll send you some brass I picked up off the range.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Jason,

If you really want all 1 lot, send me what you have, and I'll send you 500 from the same lot. And/or, let me know your lot numbers, and I'll check mine to see which one's I have to exchange with you. I have lots of 260 brass right now.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Just last week we weighed 100 Winchester brass.

19-160gr +/- 2.0gr
24-180gr +/- 2.0gr
57-191gr +/- 3.0gr

All once fired brass, and surprised the heck out of us. Lapua arrived about 2 days later.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Are you being anal? Probably. If it bothers you, make up 20 rounds using 4 from each bag, and 20 more rounds, all from one bag, and test fire them. If there's a difference, you're not being anal, but my guess is the differences will fall within statistical limits.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

I had a sealed case of 1000 Win 308 cases. They varied as much as 8 grains in weight IN ONE BAG of 50.

I sold the whole lot and replaced it with Lapua.

Good luck with your Remmy - you are gonna have to sort it by weight anyway, independent of lot #.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

I got 200 lapua and started weighing .1gr
got about 6-8 piles just ended up putting the heavy half in one box and the light half in another.
only had 1gr overall
lapua is nice

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Range time is too precious to worry about saving a few $ on components especially when you are shooting long range. I have to drive for two hours one way to shoot 1000+ yards. For this I use Lapua brass, CCI BR2 primers, Varget, and 175g SMKs. Oh and the wind is normally > 10 mph. I need all the help I can get.

Re: I want all the same lot - Am I being anal?

Perhaps you are being are a little too anal

If you doubt your own skills in saying you might not notice it, then perhaps you should just sort them all out and shoot them
