I want to build a 300 Win Mag XM-3. Am I crazy?

I know it sounds ridiculous but I adore the XM-3 and want to have one put together by Dave Bruno here in PA. Going through a tough divorce and I've decided that diving into my hobbies will be my distraction. If you're unfamiliar here is a Hide thread about what the gun is. I know some of the parts will be hard to source, and there's a chance I end up going with 308 but I'm really on the 300 Win Mag hype train. I am not a new shooter and can pretty routinely get my Bergara B14 HMR out to 400 yards on steel in .308. My thought is I would love a sharp shooting rifle sized and looking like the XM-3. It's just peak to me, but I was also in OIF (although nowhere near cool enough to get one of them), and that era of weapons just has a death grip on my heart. I'd love any thoughts and discussions on this idea. Can't post in the forums yet since my account is old but was not used for the last 11 years or so. Go figure marriage and kids will do that. If anyone knows a good hookup on the actual XM-3 stock from McMillan I would be forever grateful. I'm going to call Hart on Monday to have a barrel spun for it. Thoughts on the best Reminton 700 Long Action clones?

Oh, man, sorry to hear about your gut wrenching family troubles. I think a side activity like building a rifle you had a desire to try/own is a great idea. And thanks for bringing up the XM-3. I was not familiar with the weapon and the information in the links looks interesting.

I love the 300 Win Mag but if I was to build an XM-3 I would build it in the cartridge it was made for. The 7.62x51mm, M118LR. It looks like the scope that was on it was Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 which you can pick up used for about $1k these days.

It would be great if you could update this thread with your progress when you can.

I say to invest in some ammo and spend your time shooting it vs internet dreaming.

Your 308 should be able to get you out to 1k yards with a 175gr bullet, you have a bunch more meat on that 308 bone you could enjoy before getting a second entree?
Just a point to ponder.

I'm curious about your thoughts on why doing this? Personally I would think a project like this could help ease the pain.
Because spending money on stuff like this while in litigation could be used against you if the divorce is contested and you are arguing assets/money.

It’s best to wait until the situation is done and then you can begin to rebuild.
