Why don’t we keep stuff secret anymore? I mean none of this is like super secret, but why let anyone know what we are developing?

It’s always been this way I know and I’ve always asked the same question.

I think because to continue to receive funding, DARPA needs to ocassionaly put on a public show. I'm hopeful we aren't seeing the most cool stuff.

DARPA doesn't show its cutting edge tech at all...just "old toys" that have been around for years. If you're seeing it, (and don't have clearances), it's probably been around for >20 years.

In 1998, I worked for a fiber optic company in their Forward Looking Work dept. (which was an R&D sub-group in the company's R&D division). We were designing & building products for testing that are just now being adopted by industry.

I can only imagine what's under lock & key in the "Defense" industry...considering the billions that get thrown at it (+ the "black budget money").

    Consider that:

The science behind the microwave oven was in use, in 1954...

The Arpanet (predecessor of the Internet) was in use, in 1968-70...

Tech follows a path, when first created, which tries to answer these questions:

    1. Can we use it to kill people (or win wars)?

    2. If no to #1, Can we use it in the medical industry?

    3. If no to #1 & #2, it is cleared for public release. Then, the question is: How can consumers use it?
