I’m considering a 300WM build with an old 300RUM action I have lying around. I was curious if the cartridge has a preference on barrel length and twist rate. Thoughts?

Depends what you want to do with the rifle. I’d personally prefer a 10 twist. Then a 22-24” barrel for hunting platform. 24”-26+” for a long range rig

I am in process of building a 300WM and went with a Remage 24 inch barrel with a 1:9 twist and 3.600 inch free bore. The stock/chassis I am using will take the 3.850 CIP length AICS magazines. I will be shooting the Berger 208, 215, 220, 230 bullets for hunting and target shooting.

If you plan on shooting 230's and heaver, I would go with a 1:8 twist and maybe the 3.700 inch free bore. Also, going with a stock or chassis that will take the 3.850 CIP mags, will let you change over the the 300 PRC with just a simple barrel change.

I was running a 27" Jury custom barrels on mine, with a 1:10 twist. I got tired of lugging around a rifle that was just about as long as I am tall when the suppressor is on it. So I had it cut back to 22" and now I am just wating for my new chassis to get the thing going again. I am curious to how much speed I have lost and how much speed I can get back up by switching powder.

If I were to get another barrel for it I would go 1:9 twist and probably not longer than 26". Maybe 24" is the sweetspot?

A 1:10 worked very good all the way up to 230 bergers.... (at my elevation). Unless you are at sea level or wanting to shoot solids I don't think you would need anything faster. As far as barrel length- 24 to 28.

I run 28”, 1-9 twist with Berger 215s and h-1000. I am running just over 3000 FPS with this set up in 2 different rifles. As mentioned above my reamer is set up to put the 215s where they belong so my oal is 3.700” +. There are lots of ways to do the same thing but this combo works. I have killed a pile of elk with it from a few yards to way out there.

I have my eye in a near mint R700 from 1995 that the seller is claiming has a 24” barrel. I was going to buy it cheap and drop in in a Precision stock/chassis. I asked him to double check because the barrel is a varmint profile and I’m pretty sure it should be 26” like my other R700 .308 from that time. The purpose would be primarily for long range target shooting, but also possibly hunting.
