whats the average velocity everyone is pushing the 155gr. scenars (.308)out of a match 24" barrel? I would assume @2900 is where I should be?

i will say trying to push a 155 scenar to 2950+ is essentially trying to turn the 308 into a 260.

Re: ideal velocity for 155s

Out of AI AW 2950 fps 24" barrel, out of 22" Kreiger 2920 no pressure sighs or enlarged primer pockets. Due to recent advances in powders easy to reach with out being hard on cases. Before primer pockets might start getting loose after 4-5 firing and would have to reform with a Hart primer reform tool, doing that and annealing those cases have 20+ firings.

The advances in powders has changed what is safley possible such as the velocities RL-17 has given the heavy .308 bullets ( 190, 210 208 gr) the ,243 shooters as well as the 6.5 x 47 are rewriting what is possible.

yup, and isn't that the great thing about a 308? You can have one gun and get close -close- to the ballistics of other calibres. So if you don't really need a 260 all the time then you can just develop a similar load. A few bucks for a different load vs a lot of bucks for another gun

Similarly if you stuff a lot of rl17 into a 308 and seat a 200 gr head you get a round with the ballistics of a 300 Win Mag.

Neither are 'optimum' but as an extension of a rifles capability it is great

Re: ideal velocity for 155s

I'm getting 2925-2950 fps out of a 24" barrel with 155 scenars. I have one lot (100) of Win cases with 25 reload cycles on them at these pressures without loss of a single case due to primer pocket or crack. However, I will admit it is right on the edge of sane pressures.

Re: ideal velocity for 155s

As much as i luv'd 155scenar 308 will never beat a 6.5

My 20" pig gun 6.5x47 shoots inside my standard 155 load @ 1k, not by much but from a 20"

long barrels are no fun in woods or tactical stuff

Short is sexy
So basically i lost 6" of barrel and gave up no performance
26MOA @ 1k
