If you are just getting into or thinking about getting into comms,

@Gunfighter14e2

Understanding the why is as important as knowing the how. A fellow could do worse than deep study of signals and coding during WW2 and Vietnam. Lots of very good unclassified lessons on “why”. Knowing current technology gives the how.

SIGINT is a deep river with dangerous currents.

Related, we recently had a MIJI problem on our club repeater. Didn’t take long for the hunters to track down the fox and get it sorted. It is never good to identify using other people’s call; no one appreciates identity theft.

My best buddy passed a month ago and I have dropped myself back into teaching more classes
I lost one that would bring his own shovel, at 0230 a few months ago, as well. Those types are hard to come by and always leave a huge hole in ones heart,... Did the same went deeper into a few things, to try and off set it.

No kidding. Sorry to here that

My buddy John Rusyn was that guy. He did six fifteen month deployments between Iraq and Afghanistan. He kept volunteering to go back. He was always there when I needed.

My son just got his HAM merit badge and first radio. next step. take the test to get his call sign.
Great, I'm sure he won't have any trouble. Radio is challenging but allows freedom to source first hand info from all over this rock. Once he learns to make most or all of his own gear, it is so much more rewarding in two ways. The cost drops like a rock, and he will have a life long useful skill set few others have.

One item that many will get a lot of usage out of once they start using one is a Spectrum Analyzer. It can be used for many things and combined with a small directional antenna they are great for finding all signals.

The one I use the most is the one called "Tiny SA ultra" as it will do so much in such a compact package. Besides being a S/A its also a signal generator and will operate in both modes to 5+ GHz. in Ultra mode It sure beats dragging a 30+lb 60 GHz S/A around for std radio stuff.

It has a water fall, so if your radio does not have one or a I/F port to hook to it will work perfect for that as well.

If you're thinking of one, make sure your buying the real thing as there are some fakes floating around. On the web site they list their vendors.

I used to hunt interference for a living. It was a lot of work but fun. When not getting yelled at by the offending person.
I still have a PR100 for this job, but almost never get to play.
In some places anymore the amount of RF noise is getting out of hand. Friends in Atlanta and Miami have back rounds of S6+ most of the time. We're lucky here as when I/we find it, they always ask how can it be fixed. In Atlanta & Miami doors slam in your face,... Power company here (a Coop) is real good about keeping up their junk, a will ask for help at times to prove the issue is not theirs.

We had some really good lawyers and fcc to get most everything cleaned up. 😂

Wow, we have not had to go that route to date. Course most of the stuff we find is do to the FCC,... NOT,.... doing their job and letting junk in from China in the first place. Some of what we find is due to none existent or modified maintenance issues. Then again some stuff is designed so poorly its highly susceptible to minor issues. Have a Astron power supply, Am/Fm radio, and the X DRO on my milling machine, that had to be modified due to legal emissions. Seems the more we advance, the more issues we cause our selves.
