If you were building a 260. Short or long action?

If you were about to build a 260 rifle on a custom action would you go short or long action?

Edited to add: The reason I am asking. I am going to be running either a mcmillan with a badger DM setup or Accuracy International chasis. The problem I had with 308 was I was running out of space in the mag to push the bullet out to get close to the lands. So I was considering going with a long action so that I could put that bullet out as far as I safely wanted. Hope I am making senses

A friend just had a custom 260 built,he found out he screwed himself by having them do a little longer chamber/throat to seat the bullet further out. Here is the thread:

This may save you a few questions and some grief if your chamber has not been cut already.

Decide on the bullet you want to use, load a couple of dummy rounds at the max length your mags will tolerate and send them with your rifle to be rebarreled. Gunsmith chambers barrel to match your mag length loads and Problem Solved....

Paul

Go short

Short. You should also check out the Alpha morta2 mags. I believe you can goto 2.985 coal on your loads. They are also priced right compared to the competition.

good luck

Short Action
260 Match Chamber
142 SMK .010 into the lands
If you wanted to jump the bullet .010 it would be right around 2.774. Yeah it seems a bit short but it still has room for more powder.
+1 Rthur I'm using the Alpha Mags too #2 series even though I don't need the added length I figure I might need it for another chambering one day.

Also thoroughly discuss with your smith the reamer he uses and don't leave with out a clear understanding of the loaded rounds length and at what dimension it will be touching the lands. So you can mock load your bullet of choice and ensure it will work in your setup.
I also have berger 140's they measured 2.810 oal just touching the lands and Lapua 139 scenar was at 2.736 oal touching the lands.

Re: If you were building a 260. Short or long acti

If you are really worried about the mag-length/seated to the lands issue, look into 6.5x47L It will allow the longest OAL and still fit in the mag. I'm not sure I favor the small primer, but everything else is great.

I think the issue is as your throat lengthens with use, you reach the point where you can no longer touch the lands and remain mag length. You also may need to put a notch in the action feed ramp to use the extra .1" that an AICS can provide. The 260 has more powder capacity, but the 6.5x47L solves the mag-length issue completely without the need for mags longer than 2.80" or feed ramp modifications.

Re: If you were building a 260. Short or long acti

go short, use a reamer with about .100 freebore that will put a 140g berger out about 2.905 give or take a lil, with plenty of room left to chase the throat

notch the action run alpha or plate less 5round aics mags and you are good to go.

that is how mine is set up and i love it, fill it up with H4350 and rock on

get a surgeon dbm over the badger its much nicer

Re: If you were building a 260. Short or long acti

I had my action modified, notched out to feed the longer bullets but as you can see by the loaded round lengths I doubt it needed it with that 260 match chamber oal's especially the Lapua 139 oal.

Re: If you were building a 260. Short or long acti

If I was going to shoot a 6.5 bullet in a LA, it wouldn't be a 260. That's a waste.
I would shoot a 6.5x55, 6.5-'06, or if I didn't care about barrel life, a 6.5x284.

There is nothing to gain but putting a short round in a long action just to seat the bullet out a little.
