Rifle Scopes Illumination

Re: Illumination

Red seems to be the most popular.

Many scientific studies show that the color red increases heart rate and breathing, while green slows heart rate and breathing. Based on that information, if I were target shooting, I would go with green - every little bit helps.

Re: Illumination

Have actually tested in low-light 2 different green and 2 different red scopes ... green all the way if it's available for me. Very soothing to the eye & bloom doesn't kill my eyes the way red does.

Supposedly, since green is the middle of the visible light spectrum, we process it a whole lot better than red which is at the end.

Re: Illumination

I've had ACOG's in all the colors offered and they all have their place. Amber is the easiest (brightest) to see - so for quick shouldering and shot it's the fastest (for me). Red seems to have the effect described above in that it seems to increase heart rate - that may have it's place in that all of the senses are heightened (i.e greater awareness). Green seems to blend into the target (but not too much) thereby allowing positive target / shot placement i.d.. AND - which reticle also has great effect on which color. As with most all things, this is subjective and what works for me may not work for you.

Re: Illumination

I prefer red. Green is brighter. I read that green is the brightest color that won't mess up your night vision. I'm guessing that's a reason that the lights inside our armored vehicles, tanks and Bradleys, are green.

If you are using a PVS in front of your scope, you wouldn't use the illum in your scope. You could see the black reticle fine.

I don't like blue. Have you noticed how signs that are lit in blue are hard to read?

I like the way you think Jay...

Re: Illumination

I personally prefer green that's why I bought an Accupoint 1-4 with green triangle, had a 1.25-4 with red triangle before but like the green more. I tested the green one on 1x with my NV-Goggles: it works but its far away from an Eotech or Aimpoint.

Re: Illumination

I prefer Red. It has always worked for me. I have been told that red effects night vision less. I am smart enough to know I don't have the education to be able to prove or disprove that. I just know nothing in my experience has caused me to believe it isn't true.

Red stands out very well when using a clip on NVD (although you can usually just leave the reticle off).
