When I had my stock ordered from McMillan, I forgot to have sling studs installed. I want to put a bipod on the rifle, but don't know what my best option would be at this point. Should I find a gunsmith to install a threaded insert for just a sling stud, or should I have a rail mounted? Also, does anyone know of a gunsmith within 100 miles of Auburn, AL? I would go back to the guy that built the rifle, but he's nearly 300 miles away and don't really care to go back down there if I don't have to. TIA

Here's a link to accessories for the Atlas, including foregrip rail sections and the necessary parts to mount them. If you click on the rail fastener link, it gives some good pics showing how they recommend mounting them. You'll need to decide for yourself whether you want to try it at home, or have a gunsmith do it. Best of luck!

Lots of ways to install a mounting system..depending on your bipod choice. On my Savage 12 target, I installed a stainless steel bushing (from archery dealer) that is used on compound bows..for the stabilizer to screw in. It is 5/16" UNF thread, has a large shoulder, and epoxies in the stock. I took a 5/16 UNF bolt and installed a wing nut on it, which stays on my bipod. This thing will NEVER move!

I made it out of some scrap aluminum we had in the shop. I ended up drilling a BUNCH of 1/2" holes in the base plate and foot assemblies to lighten it up. I like the design principles, but don't think it needs to be mounted to the rifle. I think it could work at least as well with a padded cradle up top, and doesn't need to be a part of the rifle's all-up weight. In fact it's got me interested in trying something along similar lines.

UPDATE: I ordered the picatinney rail and hardware kit from Accushot and ordered the Atlas Bipod from Triad. That seemed like the simplest, most efficient route. Should get the rail and hardware in this week and have it installed and then receive the bipod mid next week. I worked for a composite manufacturing aerospace company for about 6 years so this little project should be fairly straight forward and easy enough, especially after reading the link above. There are a number of things that I could've done to achieve my goal of mounting a bipod, but I wanted everything to maintain that "professional build" appearance just in case my financial matters tank for some unknown reason in the future and I have to sell my rifle. I'll do whatever I have to do to avoid that day, but I can't foresee the future, I can only prepare for it. You all know what I'm saying. Anyway, done rambling, went with the Atlas bipod and rail w/ hardware.

did ya get it sited in yet(rest off bench)?. looks like you will be cutting it close if your gonna shoot with me and my son on the 28th. no biggie tho if you dont get it sited in it can be done then either 100,200 or 300 yds most of the time there are only 2 other people shooting at the 300 they practice for cmp matches.all this rifle biulding got me in to the mood so i'm looking at putting together a 6br gonna start ordering parts in a few weeks.

Yeah, I've got a good zero on it at 100 but I may need to tweak it a bit. Ultimately, I want to get a 300 yard zero so the 100 yard zero is just to have a reference in order to find paper at 300, and I'm good there. I've got 3 day delivery and my bipod is supposed to ship on the 24th. If I don't get it in time, I can shoot off a bag. Wouldn't be my first time.

Got my rail and T-Nut kit in the mail today. Used a 3/4" forstner bit and a few various sized drill bits and had this thing installed in less than 10 minutes. Hopefully my Atlas bipod will come in the mail before next Friday.

Received an email from Triad stating that my bipod has been shipped. Via the UPS tracking number included, it is currently in Kansas and I should be receiving it tomorrow afternoon. Getting excited!
