Well, I am hooked on this LR stuff so after a getting started in reloading, developing different loads, and being satisfied with the 200Y range results I went out to the desert this morning. My plan is to get out to 1100-1200y with my light 270 hunting rifle and see how I like this game b4 going for broke on the nice rifles. I figure inferior equiptment only makes the shooter try harder anyway, right? Gotta start close so here is 600Y in 10 mph wind...2.5" OK?

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

The licence plates extended my old rangefinders quite well.

I love JBM calculator it got me within 4" on these 3 shots.

140G Berger VDLs exploded into dust when they punched through the electrical box cover.

I did 5 more shots as the wind got gusty and so the group streched to 6" but still only 2.5" high

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

it all down hill from here now brother. now just get some good glass that tracks well and has plenty of travel, then pick a descent long range caliber of your choice doesn't need to be a magnum and start banging away. also having a good spotting scope and a buddy will really help your shooting also.

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

Welcome to the addiction. The 270 is a very good caliber, if someone like Berger would offer a target VLD for it you'd probably see a huge comeback in the long range world.

If you're a reloader, take a look at the 280 Rem when it's time to rebarrel. It will use all the same brass, powder, primers that you have on hand and there's a pile of excellent bullets in 7mm out there.

With RL22 or RL17 you should be able to shoot the Berger or JLK cruise missiles to 2950 fps or faster (180gr bullets) from a good barrel.

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

JLK's?

What barrel do you recommend for the 280? I think the 5r stuff is interesting...stays cleaner?

I have a Sako AV 270 Fiberclass with a Bushnell 4-16 4200.
It can only get 17.5 MOA over my 200 Zero so I think after 900 I need more cant.
Are there 10-20moa rings that I can buy?

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

yes you can buy burris signature ring that will have 20moa built into them. I vote start over rather than rebarreling. hate to confuse you but I am building a 284 for long range rather than the 280, if you build a 284 on a long action you can have it throated long and seat the bullets really long, it is not uncommon for the f class guys to get 2900-2950fps with berger 180 vld with rl17.

Re: I'm hooked, first time.

My bullets would almost fall out if I tried to touch the lands @3.42" lol. I Just stick them at 3.35 so they still feed well.

I'd really like to try those 7mm 180 bergers, just looking at the G7 is sick.
