do they work ? i have some 45 acp i want to take appart and reload and i was going to go this rout, when you use the bullet puller can you save the powder charge ?

and lastly when pulling bullets do you have to resize the cases? or can you just recharge and then seat the bullet again ?

Re: impact bullet puller questions

I don't save the powder. That small amount doesn't cost much so I just throw it in the flower bed. There might be something from the bullet- lube if it's a lead bullet, or something in the puller to contaminate the powder.

No you don't have to resize, but you will need to flare the case mouth to seat another bullet.

They work but, I recommend a cullet style puller. You can save the powder with either option but, less mess with the cullet.

For the 45, I wouldn't worry about sizing again. A rifle would be a different story.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

A collet puller might scar the bullet. If you want to use the bullet you pull the kinetic puller works without marring the bullet.

The case won't need to be resized since it hasn't been fired. The most you should have to do is bell the case mouth to seat another bullet.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

For jacketed bullets, the collet puller is definitely the way to go. Any marks on the bullets will be superficial, an will probably polish out with a short trip to the brass tumbler. The only time my collet puller has left marks was when I was pulling military bullets. After I learned a simple trick...push the bullet a little bit back into the case to break the seal... I had no more marks.
The inertial puller is at its best with cast bullets.
It will work you half to death, and beat a dimple in your table top. They break, too.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

If you decide to use the Inertia puller, use a shell holder instead of the supplied collet type case holder. I would not use a counter top to smack the bullet puller. I have sat on the porch steps and beat it on the porch. Save the bullet & case and throw the powder on the flowers.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

what iam unsure of is why throw the powder away ? the only reason i want to pull it is because way back when i only had scoopers so i would get the closest scoop and charge the caseing, now that i have a digital scale i can actually load 4.7 gr of powder instead of 4.0

other then that i have no need to pull the bullets

I've collect a few handful of FTF and seating depth test bullets. So inertia puller are nice. Reclaiming powder, mainly on pistol bullets, is pointless. 1 pound of pistol powder will load like 1300 rounds soo I'm not too worried about loosing 5 grains of powder

Re: impact bullet puller questions

When I use a kinetic puller I hit it on a piece of carpet on my garage floor.
As far as throwing the powder out I shoot lead bullets in my .45acp. The powder gets fouled from the lube on the bullet.
I don't have to pull many bullets so losing a little powder isn't a big deal.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

I always use a collet puller if possible, but an inertial puller will come in handy as well. The Hornady camlock will not mark your bullets as long as you can get the bullet into it past the ogive. I run into a problem there sometimes, most often with 45 auto. If the bullet is seated to the ogive, the collet will bite down into the jacket. I use the inertial puller for that case.

A collet puller is MUCH easier though.

Re: impact bullet puller questions

"do (impact pullers) work ?" Certainly.

"i have some 45 acp i want to take appart" Pulling handgun bullets with a collet puller can be difficult or impossible.

"can you save the powder charge?" Certainly.

"do you have to resize (and expand) the cases?" Not if you're using jacketed bullets.
