Hey everyone,ww

I have always been curious of others opinions on the overall importance of good aftermarket bottom metal on a Rem700 repeater build. Personally, I have replaced all of my factory Rem's 700 bottom metal. I feel that it's an essential part of adding stiffness & strength ("that's what she said") to the action overall but I have always wondered how much & was it worth it from a build expense POV.

For all of you Rem700 build owners do you think it was worth the extra expense??? Now keep in mind I'm not referring to the the detachable magazines type of benefits as they are obvious but spendy. I want to know what you truthfully feel you gained by replacing the factory OEM units.

I know its a weird question but one I have always thought about.

Thanks,
LRH

I picked up a stainless steel bottom piece a couple years back with a m2 grenade launcher attachment. Best investment I ever made IMO....

I havent changed mine yet. If i do i would probably get a detachable system but its so damn expensive...I havent had any "functionality" issues with the stock bottom metal outside of it feeling cheap.

Re: importance of good bottom metal Rem700 build

my factory magazine spring was weak and would let the bolt ride over rounds sometimes. also i hated unloading the rifle wuikly in the truck having to catch the four rounds as they fell out. i did replace with a dbm.

i know i could have replaced the spring only and my feed issue would likely be solved, but i wanted it built like fort knox (no idea why they say that, i went to basic there, not good buildings at all) and now i have confidence in my entire weapon system's strength.

long story short, it helps me sleep at night.

Re: importance of good bottom metal Rem700 build

Several of my hunting rifles have the factory bottom metal. I believe that the upgraded steel bottom metal from PT&G or Williams is stronger, but don't believe it necessarily increases accuracy of a firearm. If the action and bottom metal are properly fit or bedded, all the bottom metal does in relation to the action and action screws is act as a spacer or washers at the bottom of the pillars or bedding clock to tighten the action screws.

If there is not a good fit with the bottom metal or action to the stock, I think you can induce stress into the action when the action screws are torqued to spec.

FWIW. Just my opinion.

On my Stiller 6x47L, I have reminton alloy/aluminum bottom metal. I bedded the bottom metal with acraglass and there is no undue stress on the bottom metal. Is the BDL floor plate or trigger guard as strong as a steel or stainless steel? NO. But the ends of the bottom metal act as spacers/washers to torque the action screws against.

On my Stiller 7mmSAUM, I currently have PT&G tactical bottom metal, also bedded, but there is a DBM setup on the way for it.

Re: importance of good bottom metal Rem700 build

I have used williams on my 700 sps tac it is the new style and is very well made and solid. I also have a dakota on my m24 build in progress, and while it is very nice i plan to upgrade it to the sunny hill which is more solid like the williams.
I have seen the PTG and it is also a good to go product for the price. It really comes down to what you are looking for. But it is a very good idea to replace the pot metal IMOP.
