Improved bolt for Remington 700 LTR?

Hi All,

I have a Remington 700 LTR in .223. It's the first Remington I've owned and it shoots like a laser so I'm pretty happy with it. There's one thing that's been driving me nuts, and that is that it doesn't like to eject casings unless the bolt is brought back real quickly... I was wondering if there are any replacement bolts that any of you 700 LTR owners might recommend that can help mitigate this?

It's not a super big deal, but it has hung me up on more than once occassion when out hunting. I've seen a couple of replacement bolts out there, but am not sure which is the best to go with, or if any of them actually help with this in the first place.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Russ

Is the extractor not hanging on to the case when you pull the bolt back slowly? When the case leaves the chamber and hits the side wall of the action, it might be letting go, might just need a new extractor installed.

Hi Austan,

It's either that, or the ejector just doesn't kick the casing out with enough force. If the bolt goes back slowly, the casing just drops back onto the magazine. I think I've found a bolt that claims to fix that particular 'problem' so I'll try that and see how it goes. I think it's more of a design issue, according to some websites that I've read the 700 action doesn't like being drawn back slowly instead of quickly. Not a big deal, I was just curious what the real value of some of these 'custom' replacement 700 bolts was...

Thanks,

Russ

Buying a new bolt for the rifle is an unnecessary expense. The parts needed to fix it are fairly inexpensive. Did you buy the rifle used? I ask because recent history has shown the Remington extractors to be quite overbearing in the 223 rifles and a lot of folks grind them down to improve their function. If you feel a new bolt is the best way to go, give 'er. I'd shutter at the thought of a 200 hundred dollar bolt to fix a 25 dollar problem.

Link to new extractor.

Good luck to you.

Yea, replacing the bolt is like, buying a new car to fix a flat tire.
Check the extractor and the ejector first before moving on to replacing the bolt.

Very likely the extractor does not have enough tension.Have a smith look at it or better yet order a new one from Brownells and replace it.They are less then $20 and come out just like a spring cip.

SHHH... I just about got my wife convinced of that one!

But seriously, the extractor on a Remington is a crappy design. I'm going to look into getting a "Sako" style extractor installed on my Remington.

Hey Oneshot,

I saw that option as well - there was a video online where a guy was demonstrating exactly the issue I'm talking about and then he was showing how to modify the extractor so that it worked like the Sako. It looked like a great solution, but the closest I've ever come to working with machine tools is using my electric toothbrush, so that kind of modification is not something I could do at home :)

Thanks to everyone else for all the advice - I'll definitely look at just replacing the extractor, that seems like it would be more cost effective route.

Another problem you might run into, is that the new bolt might not headspace properly in your action with the current chamber. That could cause you more headache than fix. I personally would bring/send the rifle to either a smith you know or a reputable smith from the board, and have them fix it properly for you.
