hi guys
i have savage model 10 FCP HS Precision .308
this is the story :
i am getting into service rifle shooting
i bought white oak service rifle wich i am using for 200,300,500 and 600 yards and i spend a lots of money on it.
now @ the club they changed our league to also include 1000 yard any gun any sight !
this is the rifle i have for that
never fired it @ this distance so i don't even know if i can be competative @ 1000 yard
so my question is how can i improve my stock rifle to be able to hit a target @ 1000 yards?
i don't want to spend $ 2000 .
untill i can have a gunsmith build me a rifle for 1000 yards
thanks guy's

Re: improving my savage model 10

The rifle itself doesn't need any improvements. I think all you'll need is a 20 MOA base and a decent scope that has at least 50 minutes of travel. You shouldn't need any more than 40 minutes of elevation with a 20 minute base but I want as much elevation in a scope as I can get just to be safe. If you're shooting factory match ammo, I'd probably go with Federal GMM or Black Hills 175gr for the extra stability at that distance. If you're loading your own, the 155gr Lapua Scenar over RL15 has worked well for me.

Re: improving my savage model 10

Do you reload?, if so I would highly reccomend getting a shilen or pac-nor replacement barrel for it in 243, 260, or 7mm-08, ect... its no where near impossible to be competative at 1k with a 308, but its a WHOLE lot easier with the above cartridges.

if your interested i've done a lot of work on savages, if you want to do the rebarrel I can do it for ya in about 10 minutes

i'd also recommend bedding your rifle, which I can also help you with,

Shoot me a PM if your interested, I live about an hour north of you

hope I was of some sort of help!

Re: improving my savage model 10

HI,
Your rifle will work fine at 1000 yards. Depending on the rules(some groups require the use of 155gr bullets)will tell you what projectile you need to use. I like 175gr for 1000, but some use 155gr. You probably dont want to use 168 any further than 5-600 yards-they tend to go subsonic around 800, and not always accurate at that distance. Federal GMM 175 works well, as does M118 Long Range. When you have shot the factory barrel out (about 5,000 rounds), rebarrel it in .260 Rem

Regards,
Phil

i do reload
but i have not loaded for 1000 yard accuracy yet

i'm not sure what the rules are but i think i may try to shoot in f-clas TR which is only .308 or .223
so i don't have to shoot against $5000 guns

I'll bet you can get a few more rounds than 5000 out of a .308 like 3000 more.
