I have done a Sniper's Hide search and did not find what I am looking for. I would like to know the opinion of the IMR 8208 powder and is it clean burning and does it leave a heavy residue in a 223 rifle like some powders?

Thanks for the info.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

It is wonderful powder in my opinion. Very temperature insensitive. It will leave a green residue on your bolt however.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

I shoot quite a bit of this powder, and it is my favorite by far. Very temperature insensitive, I get excellent velocity, and it meters really well. I love it for .223 with heavies and .308 with 155's.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

I use it in 223 with 69SMK's, my AI with 75 AMax's, and my Grendel with 123 AMax's. I have really good luck with it. Cant say I have ever noticed it turning my bolt green?

My son and I compete with this powder using 77 and 80 gr bullets in our service rifles. It burns cleaner than Varget and I haven't really noted any difference of consequence across the lots I have used. Temperature stability is good too.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

On my AR, the bolt gets a green-blue residue on it on the backside, not the face. I assume that if using a bolt action rifle, this would be a non-issue.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

I burn it in .223, 6x47L, 308. It is by far my favorite powder. It works with the 175 in .308 very well.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

It shot great in my 223 bolt gun but I needed a bit slower powder to shoot the 80 grain bullets to 1000 yards.
I know this is a 223 thread but my 6BR loves 8208 with the 107SMK.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

My favorite powder for my .22BR in an 8 twist. Very stable in the heat.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

Anyone care to throw some of their pet loads out there? Specifically 75s in the .223, and 175s in .308?

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

I too am interested in loads...thinking of switching from Varget for my 18" AR shooting 75/77s and 22" 223AI shooting 80gr AMax.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

For 77's or 75's 23.2 is the usual, but you will hit another node at 24.0 and that's not too hot so far. 24.3 it gets HOT works for 2850 in a 20 in CLE chamber.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

IIRC 41.7 with the 175MK, or 178 A-max. 2.81, with standard cci primers, Lapua brass, or Win. 2550fps from a 20 in bbl. Shoots half minute or better to 700.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

22.5-22.8g with Hornady 75bthp/BHA match brass. 42.9 with 168 amax. Did not work so well with 178's.

Re: IMR 8208 Powder

It also has shorter kernals than most extruded powders, therefore it meeters alot better! Its the only stick powder that I can run in my 17 without having to tap it in!
