Let me preface this by saying I know very little about AR-15s.
I have a 20" A2 style AR-15 that I got from my father. The lower is a parkerized grey color and is marked E.A CO J-15 in raised lettering. My dad also has an A2 carbine on an identical J-15 lower. Both rifles shoot well and have been reliable in my limited experience...minute of pop can is about all I've ever tried with them.
Google has told me these are Essential Arms lowers, and are "preban" receivers, which would jive because I remember shooting the 20" rifle for the first time on my 9th birthday in 1992.
Can anyone confirm that Essential only sold these as lowers and not complete rifles? I can't find any markings on my 20" upper with make/model or twist rate info.
Thanks!
