Hey guys
I have used the same IMR 4064 powder for over 15yrs, it has been a really reliable powder and has been used by Federal in their Gold Medal Line since I can remember.

They came out with a relatively new powder IMR 8208 which is suppose to be really temp insensitive, proabably close to that of Varget. I loaded up 10rds of my usual powder charges that I use with 4064 to run through the chronograph.

Got to the range yesterday and set up the 300yd targets, I didn't have my usual 3" diamonds so I put up 7" diamonds and just aimed at the 6 o clock apex of the diamond.

I only got 5rds through the chrono before it shut down on me (been having problems with it) so I just shot on paper to see what kind of groups I would get.

10 rounds of each powder charge

LC LR brass sized with redding bushing dies .336 neck
Fed 210m primers
41.8gr 8208
175smk @ 2.80"
Ohler 35 chrono at 10ft.

Gave me a ave velocity of 2651fps and SD of 11 for 6 shots, then the chrono shit on me for the next increment of 42.2gr

I increased the increments to 42.2 and 42.7gr

Temp 59 degrees
Baro 30.04
Humidity 64%
Wind 8 to 12 from 3 o clock

I only got a decent grouping with the 42.7 for 10 shots on paper, wind was pretty bad and I did not come up enough from when I shot the 42.2gr load in between the two paper targets I had posted on the backer.

42.7 of IMR8208

I also used my usual load which is 42.2gr of 4064 and shot 10 shots as a comparison, wind was not as bad for this group. I made a sight adjustment since I only saw 1 of the six shots I had made, I didn't know the other five were in the black of the diamond.

There are 3 additional handgun rounds on this target, 2 at the top left and one at the edge bottom right, my Sgt decided that he wanted to see if he could hit my target at 300yds with his handgun? He did, those are .40cal rounds from a glock 22 at 300yds!

I plan on testing this more as winter hits and it gets colder, and hopefully get my chrono working again so I can compare the muzzle velocity when it gets colder plus accuracy.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

Got my chronograph checked out today, just needed a fresh battery and it is good to go!! Will be testing the loads on friday and will post this weekend.

Anyone looking for muzzle velocity of Speer .40 S&W Gold Dot thru a glock 22 it 1150fps ave

Plus shot Mk262 Mod1 thru a RRA 14.5" M4 @ 2550 ave velocity

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

I'm also interested in your results , please keep us posted.
What is the barrel length you were getting 2651 fps with the 41.8 grs.?
I have been using the IMR 8208 with 175 Bergers at 42 grs. and getting one ragged hole groups at 100 meters with any brass used , BR2 primers and at 2.890 COAL.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

The barrel length is a 22" Schnieder barrel on a clone M40A5 built by Mark Williams. Here is the rifle:

Got targets set up at 300yds friday moring and started shooting thru the chronograph at 8am, here are the weather conditions at the time

42 degrees (previous was 59 degrees)
30.24
64% humidity
Wind 1-2 mph from right to left full value

I started with 42.7gr to make sure my chrono was still working propperly, I didn't want to start with the 41.8 since I had already gotten some readings for it. Didn't take long for the chrono to start acting up on me, I only got 6 shots out before it started messing up on me. I shot all 10rds on the paper and got the following group and readings.

42.7gr IMR 8208, 175smk at 2.810"
Ave 2707fps
ES 71fps for 6 shots

I PM'd the chrono and started with the 41.8grs and also got about 6 rounds thru it before started acting up. I still got the following information from it. The first two shots are at the top not sure why, but as I shot more the group got tighter, last four shots impacted into the small clover center.

41.8gr IMR 8208, 175smk at 2.810"
Ave 2649fps
ES 17fps for 6 shots

I wanted to shoot the 42.2gr again for group but we had to start the training day for work and then another unit had the range for the afternoon so I didn't get to finish. I will keep playing around with this over the next couple of weeks and keep posting.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

I just ordered 8lbs of this for my .264lbc, interested in seeing what it can do in the .308 and .223 as well compared to Varget, which is my normal go-to powder.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

Thanks for posting the info Hogstooth. 8208 is treating me good with the 175 Bergers. Gun is holding .5 MOA out to 300 , hope to be stretching it out further soon.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

I have a 1-12" Hart 24" in a Rem. Varmint contour. It didn't like 175's too well, so I've been sticking to 155's and 168's.

A couple of weeks ago, I tried some Sierra 175's with 42.1 gr. 8208 XBR in my 308. I only fired 2- 5 shot groups at 300 yards, but It shot a 1.82" (.60 MOA) and a 2.06" (.69 MOA) group. This was in Federal brass @ 2.780" ( has a Palma throat) .010" off of the lands.

I was a bit surprised. I'm hoping to take the load out to 1000 in a couple of weeks.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

That powder is an attempt to reproduce an old ,out of production one that became the "next best thing" ' cause some 6PPC bughole shooters got results(???), wanted more and there wasn't any. I saw no mention of temperature and that powder. Some body got good groups and advertised in "Precision Shooting" for ages trying to buy all available . Finally got enough $ for a production run. Fad.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

It's definetly not a fad. The ability to push 155's at 2950 out of a 20 inch barrel while being very temp stable will make 8208 be around for a long while.

With a 77 SMK out of a 18" WOA 1:7 I was getting 2773 avg. Groups were .74". I tried it at 300, 500 and 600 yards but I opened it up a bit (all my fault). Wind killed me at 500.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

I forgot to mention that the M4 that I chronod the 77gr 262 had approx 12 to 14k rounds through it, so probably running a bit slow? We usually got around 2680 to 2700fps out of these guns when we first got them almost 8yrs ago.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

This powder definitely shoots. I have used it for both 175 smk's pushing them at 2640, and 155 lapua's pushing them at 2900fps. Both out of a 5R milspec. ~0.5 moa for 5 shot groups at 100yds. I have shot it for a year now in the 175's and for performance at distance it is very consistant.

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

I will be shooting this out of my OBR today and my bolt gun at 100yds to see if there is any difference in the two? Will post when I get home

Didn't get to shoot today, range I usually go to was closed for maintenance, will have to wait to next weekend?

Re: Initial Report with IMR 8208 powder

At 52 degrees, near sea level, 20" gas gun, 42.3 grs XBR 8208, Win brass, 175SMK:
2482, 2534, 2532, 2424, 2507 ES 52, SD 21
can't find the target...
FWIW, got two measurements of 42.5 grs:
2492, 2526
I will try again with a hotter load
