Well I have been thinking about this for a while now and have gotten the go ahead from the better half. I was going to have a R700 action done, but she told me that I should just get the Pierce action and be done. Somedays I love how she thinks. So I am doing to do the Pierce LA with a 308 face, (probably a Timney trigger), AI chasis, and the PST when they are more available later (Feb, Mar 11).

I am torn on what barrel to go with. I am planning on sticking with the 308 as of right now but something about the 260 is tempting. I was looking at the Schneider barrel, Broughton, PacNor, and Hart. Looking for some input on which has the edge over the other. I have done reading on all of them, haven't found anything bad at all so far. Just wondering which would be recommended the highest.

Also any real upside to having the cryo treatment done to the rifle? The rifle is only going to be used for paper punching, and hunting. Unless we get infested with zombies.

i read all the reviews i could find and ask as many questions as i could about the diffrences in barrel manufactures.

when it can to advantages and dissadvantages i came to the conclusion that there isn't enough diffrence between the big name barrel makers to make a difffence.

You can search and read for hours about barrel choice here on the Hide. But you will probably come to the same conclusion as posted above. All the big name manufacturers like Krieger, Bartlein, Broughton, Brux, etc., make outstanding barrels that will shoot the same. Really. Pick any of them, doesn't matter.

Go with any 6.5 caliber (260, 6.5L, 6.5CM) and you will be extremely happy you did.

No idea about cryo treatment. Sounds like a bunch of crap.

If you are getting a long action, i'd go with the 6.5x55.
When loaded to its potential, you will easily get a couple of hundred FPS over the .260 Rem.
There is good brass availalble and quite a bit of load data.

Re: Input on build idea wanted

Im skeptical about the cryo treatments as well, it seems like just another hype for companies to get your money and in all reality there is 'probably' no need for it with how accurate a good solid custom rifle is.

For barrels as mentioned above they're really all exceptionally high quality products and none is likely to dissapoint in any way. I have a soft spot for Krieger but that wasn't one you listed. Schneider however happens to be local to me and im a big fan of supporting local business. Besides, they make the barrels that go in the USMC's M40s'

Caliber, really depends what game your after. Many calibers punch paper exceptionally well. If your just looking for the occasional vrmint hunt or small game in general then 6mm range is perfect for what your looking for. If you want to take deer then look at the 7mm platforms. Im a big fan of 30 caliber cartridges but 7mm just trumps them and is an all around amazing bullet.

I would only probably doing so yote hunting whitetail here in MI. Doubt I will be able to afford to head out west anytime soon to do any elk hunting.

My only hang up with the 260 would be the ammo availability, but since I reload it really wouldn't be an issue. The 308 is around everywhere and I can walk into any store and find good 308. The 260 would be easier to shoot as far as recoil, and has the edge with ballistics.
