I purchased one of these for a current build. I'm just waiting on the new barrel. I've seen different pictures posted and I've noticed the gap between the shoulder and the brake varies from build to build. I realize it doesn't effect function at all but the large gap is visually unappealing. It seems that some have done a better job than others to minimize this gap. Is it poor measuring prior to machining that's causing the large gap or the inexperience of the smith? I know I'm being anal about it, but that's just how I am.

That gap is required to allow the suppressor to slide up on the break and lock in place. There can be up to .0417 differance in this gap depending on where the break stops when threaded on and the thickness of the shim required to time the break correctly. But if you want no gap, don't plan on using a surefire suppressor.

I'm aware that it cannot be flush with the shoulder. That being said, I've seen pictures of several that have an extreme gap between the break and the machined shoulder. So if I understand you correctly the difference really lies in what shim is required to time the brake correctly?

Correct. I don't have the print in front of me, but surefire has a print for machining the barrel for their breaks. You machine to the print, screw the break on then use the provided shims to time the break. I have put the breaks on where you have to set back the shoulders to keep from using the shims to get the timing right but you still will have a gap. It is somewhere around 1/8"-3/16". If you were to go by the print and the break line up perfect without shims vs. having to use shims the most the differance should be is .0417, and that is from the thread pitch or one complete revolution of the break to get it timed.
