I have been hearing alot about AR550 & AR600 lately so I thought I would ask... Is there enough interest in AR600 plates for us to do a Group buy? If we did end up doing it would have to be fairly standard shapes; circles or squares maybe some smaller IPSC targets. This hardness tends to be a little better for closer in shooting and higher velocity ammunition.

Pricing should be in the ballpark range of 1/2" thick AR500, but with roughly 4-5lbs per SF weight savings.

Re: Interest in AR600 Targets?

I'm thinking of making a set up that I would need to hike into position, so any weight savings would be appreciated. What's the weight per square foot in AR500 and AR600? From your weight savings I assume your AR600 plate would be 3/8" think instead of 1/2", do they make AR600 in 1/4" plate? If they do any idea how well a 1/4" plate would hold up at 400-800 yards, anything from .308Win to .338LM? How about .416 Barrett and .50BMG shooting solids? Not that I'm worried about my friend hiking those out two out to the shooting area.

Same here. I would take a few. Depending on price of course.
Would save me from making ar235 targets for the .22. Just use this for everything.

Ok, the price that I thought we might be getting was not quite correct. I was quoted mil-spec armor plate and not AR600. We are re-working through the quote, but AR600 is looking to be significantly more expensive. Alot of the price has to do with quantity and my guess is we won't the quantity necessary to get a really good price, but it should be a fair price.

If we can find a small piece it would be better but I'm guessing that a 12" square would be right around $120, an 8" would be $54, 6" would be $30 and a 4" would be $14. A 25% IPSC would be $38 and a 45% IPSC would be $90. These should be in the ballpark of the final price but the numbers may shift up or down a little depending on total quantity.

Re: Interest in AR600 Targets?

Sounds like you need a connection with a company that actually uses the material in their process. I'm sure they have plenty of small and odd sized drops that could be used for your smaller targets. Of course the problem is that they don't want to bother with any of that when they can just throw it in the bin for the scrap value. Maybe someone here has some contacts.

Re: Interest in AR600 Targets?

I would think 550 would maaybe work pretty well for targets, 600 might be getting a little too brittle. I work for a company that is a Hardox dealer and work with AR400 through 600+ plate just about every day. We have to be very careful with the 600 brinell plate because it has a tendency to crack. It works really well for sliding abrasion type situations where it is well supported on the back side, but not too well in impact type abrasion. I'm guessing you would water jet it which may or may not help with the hydrogen cracking issues high brinell plate has, we use a high def plasma on a water table though so I'm not sure about the waterjet. If you do manage to get ahold of some, make sure not to leave and sharp inside corners when you cut it. Anything less than a 1/2" radius on an inside corner is pushing your luck, especially if you are going to be moving the plate around where it might flex a little.

This used to be an very expensive and hard to find piece of 2" 600 until a combination of the someone not leaving a radius in the corner and hydrogen cracking killed it...
