At the Ft. Benning Infantry Museum, they had some wicked OICW's from the 60's and on. Some interesting ones were 6.5mm or so, really long brass, and fired 4 sabot flechettes per shot. Oh, and it had a semi auto 40mm grenade launcher under it. They had all kinds of odd weapons and odd ammo they fired. One fired one flechette, but the one that fired four and used other types of ammo as well really stood out. None were obviously adopted.
They also had all the rifles that lost out to the current M4; one cool looking one was an all rubber coated rifle w/ribbed handguard that looked a lot like the one that many GI Joe dolls came with in the 80's.
Didn't see it there, but I remember reading about Army tests using high velocity sabot 12ga. rounds firing heavy darts at rifle ranges. They wanted an "all in one" package, sniper rifle, assault rifle, shotgun, less lethal, gas and mini-grenade launcher. It seemed like they got close from what I recall, but they scrapped it for one or more reasons.
