I've been reloading for my 40X .308 Repeater for about the last year.... Trying to work up the perfect load. I'm able to get 1/2MOA groups pretty consistently if I do my part. I use LC Match Brass, I neck size, trim, seat the projectiles out a little so they're closer to the lands and measure the powder as precisely as I can. It's painstaking and time consuming but I figured it was worth it. Last week I threw together some of what I call "sloppy" loads for my SCAR 17s. Small-base full length sized, trimmed, projectiles seated to 2.800, powder measured to within .5gr.... And I used crappy PMC Brass that came from the cheapest ammo I've ever purchased that was reloadable. Well, I ran out of the "good stuff" yesterday while I was shooting the 40X so I decided to try the "sloppy" stuff just to give myself more trigger time. Why not? It's small base sized and seated to standard 308 length. What could it hurt?... Except my ego because I wouldn't be able to keep a decent group... Right? I shot the BEST Groups I have ever shot! WTF!!! Basically, those reloads were probably close to FGMM. I used 168gr. SMK's, about 42gr. Of IMR4064, Winchester primers and that crappy PMC Brass. Looks like my quest is over! I can just throw together some "sloppy" reloads from now on...
The Moral of the Story?... Don't over think what you're trying to accomplish and Don't sweat the small stuff!!!
