Went out to the range this past weekend and these folks where shooting some sort of competition.

These are a couple of the sticks they were using and the ammo.

We all thought they looks interesting so I thought I would post and share.

Re: Interesting Sticks

You can't see the barrel very well in the images but they were HUGELY THICK. One massive bull barrel.

Those stocks are just platforms to rest on a bag or brace etc...

If that is F class, it's nothing like I imagined. I pictured it more like an olympic games style rifle (if that makes sense) not that.

I can't remember if they were shooting at 1000y or 565y.

Re: Interesting Sticks

It is definitely NOT F Class. F Class is shot prone from the ground.

It is most probably benchrest longrange or unlimited class. There are a multitude of classes in benchrest competition and I believe this is one of them.

This. They look horrible both aesthetically and comfort-wise.

Re: Interesting Sticks

certainly bench rest guns.

they dont need to be "comfortable", most benchrest shooters dont actually put the rifle to the shoulder, even or cheek to the stock as any differential in pressure/posture/body movement (breathing/flinch etc) may cause the shot to be off.

and they are aiming for groups in the 0.0... inch range .25 would be the limit of acceptability amongst many of these folks. some very knowledgable gunsmiths amongst them but boy dont they come across as arrogant SOBs. must be something to do with the cost of the rifles normally looking about 5k upwards easily before the optics, rests, trolley to carry the rifle their bony girl arms cant etc etc

they just "reset" the rifle to the same postion as before previous shot using the stops on the front rest, squeeze trigger using thumb and fore finger grip only, and let rifle free travel to the shoulder about 1/2 to 1 inch behind the butt. not really shooting in my opinion, hell they dont even care if they hit the centre or the edge of the target as long as they keep hitting the same spot.

they always make me think of redneck christmas elves. the they way setup all their little flags all the way out to target.

+1 Not my cup of tea either - like a good woman, rifles should have some curves to get hold of, not be a Size 0 skeleton!

Re: Interesting Sticks

Since benchrest for the most part takes the shooter out of the equation it is the discipline that is most likely to promote the enhancement of our shooting equipment.

Much like Formula One enhances the equipment that goes into mom's grocery getter.

However I prefer shooting disciplines where a reasonably accurate rifle wielded by an extremely skilled shooter will trump the best equipment with a mediocre shooter. It allows me to compete and keep my pocket book somewhat happy.
