Internet and site problems

Re: Internet and site problems

Not to jump on the pile but I've see the same symptions (freezing for up to 2 mins, timeouts, and text vs HTML). Doesn't seem load specific as I've seen the same performance at 6AM, 2PM, 11PM, or 1AM. Using IE 8, Firefox, and Safari. I've cleared cache and bounced the router a few times just in case and other sites move while this one is hung so the connection is fine. Started for me on Friday. All was golden before Friday on all three platforms.

Re: Internet and site problems

I emailed them with what you posted and all your IP addresses so they can trace it.

Interestingly you're all from AZ, so I think it is an ISP thing. What happens is they update stuff and then takes them a certain amount of time to flush it, at least I know that was a Comcast issue for some people, so we'll see what they say ?

But the ticket is in... dates and times help because they can check the logs and reconcile the data better.

Re: Internet and site problems

Understand. I run a data center so I understand troubleshooting performance issues. I also hit the site through our 200MB link from another carrier to see if it was just Cox and got the same. Sure they will figure it out.

Re: Internet and site problems

They are saying you are all routing through Comcast and that appears to be the issue how Comcast handles their particular servers, which I guess they can contact Comcast and fix it, or at least stream line it.

But they are working on it as I write this, and getting to the bottom of this.

It appears as I said, and why only certain people experience it as compared to others, that it is with only a particular ISP .

Re: Internet and site problems

Thanks for all you do. If I were tech-ier I could probably give better info.....

Comcast huh? Cox probably gets its feed from them.

Re: Internet and site problems

if you do a tracert from the command prompt to the www address you have an issue with you can see how it routes.

Re: Internet and site problems

As some of you already know - I'm the co-founder of GeoVario LLC - the hosting provider that Snipershide.com uses.

As an introduction I'm a NRA lifetime + FFL03 collector - I love my firearms - and I love the 1st amendment. As such my company is happy to do everything we can do to make sure we all can enjoy Snipershide.com (I read plenty of posts here too).
smile.gif

As for GeoVario LLC; we currently run on an OC192 fiber - we route through ATT, Level3, Cogent, XO, Savvis, Mzima, etc... all the major tier1 providers most of which are fiber OC48 networks. We are commonly told "wow my site is really quick on your service!"

In general GeoVario LLC; does it's best to "pester" the various ISPs that you all have reported your problems from. But humorously we have folks deployed in Iraq that have better more reliable performance getting to this site; than some of you in AZ, KY, NJ.

As I said we can "pester" the various ISPs when Lowlight reports them. But many times - these ISPs tell us - "you aren't our customer". If you find odd behaviors like "I hit refresh" and then the site works fine for the rest of the time... or some images load and some don't... do the WW2 mantra... do accuracy by volume.

1. Complain to your local ISP; tell them you are trying to get to "www.snipershide.com" and it's unreliable. [[ that I hit refresh and then it works implies your local ISP is using a caching device that needed to be woken up ]].

2. Do a "tracert www.snipershide.com" or "traceroute www.snipershide.com" - take the output and send it to GeoVario's support team - 'support at geovario.com'

<span style="color: #CC66CC">EDIT - also please go to - http://whatismyipaddress.com/ - and find out what your public IP address is - then email both the traceroute and your public IP to - 'support at geovario.com'</span>

As an example - I'm currently 500 miles away from the datacenter - and my average time to get a page is less than 2 seconds; folks in Iraq have said bouncing off satellites is still generally less than 20 seconds. [[ and their traceroute will be in the 250ms range, but it will complete in less than 30 hops ]]

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">
Here is an example of a "tracert" (traceroute) from our Silicon Valley, CA (Bay Area offices on Comcast Business Cable) - 13 hops from start to finish.

The important part is - the total number is less than 30 hops. Also that it completes at all - when a local ISP is having internal routing problems you may see things like a bunch of "* * * *" and no information. GeoVario allows full tracert and ping from anywhere in the world to better allow for ease of diagnostic.

That's funny... yeah Cox Communications replied to GeoVario with that same exact email as well - basically saying "you aren't our customer" go away.

You should open a ticket with them saying; "Going to www.snipershide.com is unreliable - fix it."
smile.gif

As for the traceroute results - can you also go to "http://whatismyipaddress.com/" find out what your public IP address is - and then email both your public IP and the traceroute results to:

support at geovario.com

Thanks!

Re: Internet and site problems

Another thing came to mind.

At the bottom of every single page you'll see this:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Generated in 0.047 seconds in which 0.023 seconds were spent on a total of 13 queries. Zlib compression enabled.
Powered by UBB.threads™ 7.5.5</div></div>

I use Firefox with the LORI (Life Of Request Info) Add-on; it shows me "1st byte time" - "total time" - "total size of page".

The info at the bottom of the UBB.threads *should* be the time the server thinks it took to serve your request.

In my current case "0.047" seconds - however using my LORI add-on in Firefox - I show "0.127 secs" (1st byte returned - i.e. it started sending me the page back); then I show "0.933 secs" (total time)

Obviously UBB.threads saying "0.047" vs. my web browser saying "0.933" are different numbers. However it's very important - as this means it took " 0.933 minus 0.047 = 0.886 seconds" for my ISP to get the information from the server to my laptop.

Obviously if the time that UBB.threads says is like 30seconds - it certainly would seem the Snipershide server is going nuts. Conversely if the UBB.threads says 0.047 - and you can count on your fingers to 30 before you get the page... it's time to call your ISP and open a ticket with them.

-Michael

P.S. For Firefox users - this is the add-on I am talking about - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1743/

Re: Internet and site problems

Not sure what changed but I'm back to normal performance through both Cox and Level 3. Tracert looks about the same as it was over the weekend with the exception of one hop on Cox. The first hop on the Cogent network for me was 100-150ms when I was having issues and now it's bouncing up to 200ms but performance is good. All the rest are 20-70 which was pretty much what I saw yesterday.

Oh well. Not sure what happened but glad to be back to normal.

Glad they got it fixed.

btw, you said "Level3" and "Cox"; as shown above... when Cox was having problems they were sending users FROM Cox TO Snipershide through Cogentco.

But when doing the trace from Snipershide to Cox - it went through Level3.

If you are seeing a trace that goes through Level3 from your side (at the Cox ISP). That means they got rid of - Cogentco - for the route to Snipershide.

Re: Internet and site problems

Actually two different carriers and two completely different routes. We have a 200MB link through our DC using Level 3 but I'm on Cox at home. I was comparing performance at work and at home to try and eliminate a local carrier as the issue. Level 3 never routed through Cogent just Cox.

Sorry for the confusion.

No worries... I'm not a network guy by trade; I just pass on the info to the relevant people and say "fix it" :)

Now if I can figure out why I'm not getting email notifications from this thread - then I'll be cooking with fire!

Re: Internet and site problems

I've been having the same issues. I open a page, and then when I try to click on the second or third page of a thread it doesn't go anywhere. Even now I've got a "Done" indicator in the caution triangle (using IE8) and the "Done with errors on page" message. I can go to another board or any other page without problem though. It's just happening here.
I'll try some of the suggestions.

Re: Internet and site problems

You guys don't seem to understand, boards don't all us the same software, and for good or for bad, Sniper's Hide has been using UBB since 2001, and UBB has known issues with IE, so it doesn't matter you go to "other boards" using IE8, if they are not using UBB it's irrelevant.

If you have an issue using IE, they simply try a different browser, they are free, and actually work better. When they upgrade to Version 8 in about 6 months, hopefully it solves many of these problems... but the looks of it on UBB Central it is complete revamp from this version and will hopefully address many issues.

Re: Internet and site problems

I think my provider has some problems and yesterday everything was showing error, i shut it down unplugged it and today it is working.

I noticed last night that Mzima (a large cross continent fiber network was having problems for an hour or so) - then they must have kicked someone because then everything was fine again.

-Michael

fyi - I still am unable to get any email notifications from this thread - if you guys suspect problems with Snipershide's servers - toss an email to - support at geovario com

Re: Internet and site problems

Another check of the email system, should be good now
