Below is a link to a podcast interview with Bill Allard. Bill Allard was a member of the NYPD's legendary Stakeout Squad and was partnered with the late Jim Cirillo (whom some of you may have heard of or gotten the chance to meet).
Bill was part of the Stakeout from 1968 through 1973. When the department started keeping tabs on them in early 1973 and found out just how many gunfights the guys in the squad were in and how many bad guys they'd killed, the unit was disbanded. Negative publicity following a NY Times article headlined "NYPD Murder Incorporated" didn't help their cause.
Bill was known for having been in and surviving more gunfights than anyone in NYPD history. In his interview he talks about some of his amazing accounts while on the job and how his training helped him come out on top of more than 40 gunfights with armed felons.
A quick FYI about the Stakeout Squad. This was a group of about 40-45 detectives/patrolmen and what they would do is they'd hide out in stores, banks, motels, gas stations. Pretty much anyplace that had been robbed numerous times. A team of 2-4 guys would hide out in the place and basically wait for it to be robbed again. Once the bad guys hit the place they'd go to work and take care of business.
Bill also shares some tips and things that he learned while shooting under pressure/stressful situations. It's a bit long but very well worth listening to. He comes on at around the 22:00 minute mark but important part starts after the 28:00 minute mark.
