Hello, been lurking here a while. I am active duty military, was a Scout / Sniper platoon leader in OIF 2 years ago, and graduate of Storm Mountain Sniper 1 and the GPS defense Warfighter Sniper course. I've been shooting my whole life, not an expert, but I know a couple things.

I'm having a rifle built on a Stevens 200 SA. Right now I have a Savage pre fit barrel on order from Pac Nor (Remington Sendero contour, fluted, 26" finished length, chambered in .243 Winchester) I want to shoot 115 grain DTAC bullets, so I've specified a 1:7.5 twist, unless someone can convince me a 1:7 would be better.

Here are my questions
1. Do I need a special throat for the DTAC bullet? COAL will be limited by AI magazine length. If I go with a standard throat, can my gunsmith modify it for the DTAC?

2. Pac Nor told me I need to send them a dummy round if I want a special throat...only problem is I am overseas and my reloading stuff is in the US..so what should I do about that? I don't have a load worked up yet for the DTAC, as the last .243 I had I swapped barrels on years ago. All I know right now is that whatever load I settle on, it will have to feed from the AI mags that will go with CDI bottom metal.

The rest of the build will be a Manners T5A stock, Timney Trigger & Badger Rail.

Does anyone have any experience shooting lighter bullets in a 1:7 or similar twist in .243..such as the 87 grain V Max? Everything I read says lighter bullets shouldn't be a problem, but I'd like to hear some real world experiences.

If this stuff has already been covered, I couldn't find it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Intro and Savage Build questions

If you're setting your rifle up for such a specific load, you're gonna lose some versatility. Throating your chamber to accomodate the longer bullets is gonna set your lighter bullets up for a long jump to the rifling. Not an ideal condition for extreme accuracy. The twist rate will have less of an affect on your light bullet accuracy than the throat issues.

Re: Intro and Savage Build questions

I have been using 115 dtacs and 105 Amaxs in a standard 243 chamber. The dtacs like the 1-7.5 twist and I use 47-47.5 gr of RL-15 and wolf LR primers or FGMM with winchester brass. This load is very accurate in both mine and my wifes rifle.

Re: Intro and Savage Build questions

Roger, I'll let them know I want a standard throat.

Here's another question...can a gunsmith modify the throat later if I deem necessary?

Re: Intro and Savage Build questions

Most smiths would be able to lengthen the throat with a throating reamer. Some have em stocked, some don't. Can always go longer if your mag box allows it and your ballistic demands require it.
