Hey y'all. My name is Rob and, while I'm new to posting here, I've been lurking for quite sometime on this phenomenal site. I'll get an introduction of sorts done up front:
After spending 10 years with Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, I decided to call it quits in order to be a father my daughter deserves and a husband my wife would still know. Over the course of my previous career, I was fortunate to visit a plethora of different 'vacation' spots centered around the mid-east. I did a bit of everything- from my enlisted days as a combat engineer to commissioning (and getting an edjamacation), to taking a platoon (significantly reinforced) into Sangin, AFG and the surrounding, sprawling shitiness. I got out about a year ago, moved home to God's country (Virginia), and have been absolutely itching to get into LR shooting since. To me, it's a therapy of sorts. When I'm behind a gun/ weapon, time slows down, I hear my heart beat, and for that split instance while tranced in concentration- all the stresses, all the issues, all the memories fade away. Honestly, I'm not trying to get too emotional, but it's the truth.
I have studied the "New to LR shooting/ FAQs" threads, and learned a ton. Y'all are some very smart/ experienced guys. Thanks for all the hard work and diligence y'all have pit into that!
So where do I go from here? Well:
- I want to build a rifle (I use build loosely- I'm no gun smith by any means). I'm set on 300 WinMag. Also- I really want to use a Surgeon Action. Where in the heck can I find one!? I've talked to the wonderful folks at Surgeon- but it appears there is a long, long lead time. If any if y'all have an leads- please let me know.
I'm sure ill get a bunch of different answers- but- if I land am action- should I go for a 1086 LA or 1581 XL? What are the advantages/ disadvantages?
