Introduction to precision rifle shooting.

Hi all and thank you in advance!

Just recently purchased the Daniel Defense Delta 5 bolt action rifle in 6.5 creedmoor and looking to get into precision shooting. I am an avid hunter and recreational shooter but have yet to experience PRS even though being interested for some time.

What gear is a must for getting started and what can I accumulate later on as time and funds allow?

Scope wise I’m debating between the Leupold Mark 5hd 5-25x56 (illuminated or non?) and the Vortex Razor HD Gen ii?
-currently just using one of other scopes while I do research and save up to get the right one.
What scope rings/1 piece mount do you recommend? Delta 5 is equipped with picatinny base 20 MOA/5.8 MRAD elevation

Are there any training courses or materials you recommend to teach the PROPER fundamentals so I do not develop any bad habits?

You'll be more than fine with either of those scopes, both great options. illumination is really not necessary. i've used it exactly one time in my 2.5 years of shooting prs (shot up target in dark shady spot)

Get a good bipod (Atlas, ckye, tbac, harris )

Badger, NF, spuhr, arc, mpa all make solid mounts that will work for you and serve you well. since your rifle already has 20moa rail - you only need 0moa mount/rings.

get a good rear bag (i suggest armageddon gear waxed canvas game changer or schmedium bag), or wiebad fortune cookie (waxed canvas).

you need some sort of weather meter and/or ballistic app. weatherflow meter that will Bluetooth to your phone if you are on a budget, or get a Kestrel if you can swing it.

you need some kind of dope/data card. whether it attaches to your rifle and wear it on your arm.

eventually you'll want to get a good set of binos or spotting scope and a tripod so you can stay on glass as much as possible to watch mirage/trace/find targets/etc. but you can borrow that or share in the mean time.

a comfortable pack to put all you stuff in.

As far a training you can pay for the SH online training which I've heard is good.

my advice is just start going to matches. meet people. start shooting as much as you can. find out who the usual top shooters are and squad with/watch them. Go into your first couple matches with the goal to just have fun, learn the ropes, and observe as much as possible. don't worry about the clock, don't worry about trying to beat anyone. just shoot and enjoy it.

practice dry firing at home. build yourself some stuff to shoot off of and practice getting into and building stable positions.

(not the elite model if you are on a budget. You’ll be fine without the elite and can always upgrade the unit later)

Go to a local match with your gun, ammo and good dope to max distance. Get dope with a free app like Shooter or Streloc is fine. A weatherflow meter or Kestrel 5700 works. Don't necessarily buy a Kestrel right off. I run a Garmin 701 and didn't need a ballistic model Kestrel, although I have one now. Maybe get one bag to use in front and in rear.

Play with gear at the local matches a couple times. Your squad will help and loan stuff. Find someone to shoot with. That will cut the learning curve and find your gear.

I bought a lot of crap I didn't need, lol.

I love my MK5 and never run illumination.

SH online training is good. Follow and watch Phil Velayo videos.

Learn NPA on obstacles and a clean trigger press. Those make or break you, not wind calls and bad dope...
