Rifle Scopes IOR SH edition owners

Re: IOR SH edition owners

Great glass, good clicks/adjustments, great reticle. Poor tube construction (too thin), lot's of complaints from others and gen I's, II's sent back to factory for numerous problems.

Wish the tube was thicker and the turets were farther forward on the tube (you may have a mounting problem due to this). Wish the reticle was illuminated. Other than that a decent scope for the buck. It's not a Night Force or a USO that's for sure. I'll probably ditch mine this year or next and get the new Vortex 5x20 FFP.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

Glass is amazing, reticle is great (as long as you don't need illum.), tracks great, elevation clicks feel good, but the widage on the ones I have used always seems to be well....not so great. Very, very mushy. I can't dial it with out taking my eye off target they are so mushy. It can also be difficult to get good eye relief with certain LOP stocks due to the position of the turrets. But other than that no complaints. I haven't had one fail on me yet. But some of the older ones had problems due to the thin tube construction.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

The only complaint I had with mine were the clicks. I thought the clicks could have been more pronounced. The glass was top notch and reticle is awesome. But truth be told I'm thinking about trying one of the 4th generation, if the internals have been reworked like I hear it will make an outstanding scope.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

I really like the glass and the reticle, no issues with mushy clicks. Mine tracks with no issues. The only bitch I have is the fussy eye relief. There is no way I can adjust the scope back far enough on my mod 12 Savage. I am on the quest now for an extended rail, failing that I will buy a blank rail and fit it myself. If you are mounting on a Remmy this is a non-issue as EGW builds an extended rail for them.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

My first one died on me, but the replacement is going strong.

I like the glass in the reticle. The clicks aren't quite as crisp as a Nightforce, but they are entirely usable. I really like the 10 mils on the elevation turret.

As pimpgun says, the big problem is mounting it far enough back due to lack of tube real estate to the rear. If you have a Savage this is definitely an issue, as an "extended to the rear" scope mount isn't really practical due to the required bolt clearance (I asked Glen Seekins about this).

Here's what I'm currently doing to get eye relief that I can live with:

It "works" -- but I think the concerns here are obvious.

I've seen the EGW setup first hand though, and I second pimpgun's assessment that if you shoot a Rem, it really isn't a problem.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

MattJ,

That's actually a rather clever solution. I have a Rem 700, and just bought an IOR 3-18x42MM Gen 4 about an hour ago. I'll look into the EGW rail if I have a problem.

Thanks,

Bob

How so?

What is the tube thickness? Or is it that the alloy is too soft maybe?

I thing I noticed was that back in 2006-2007 or so, the original spec Gen 1's showed a scope weight of 22oz. Current Gen 4 scope shows weight of 28 oz. Either the initials spec's were wrong, or IOR has added 6 oz to the design. Maybe they have made the tubes heavier, or they might have added more robust internal components.

I don't know for sure, just speculating.

Probably not a good idea w/ a scope tube that isn't 1 piece!

Re: IOR SH edition owners

I am not sure why everyone feels the need to mount the scope so far back . Maybe I am the one that's all screwed up but mine is mounted well forward of the Savage pictured above and I have no issues at all . I actually have one more set of notches I could move the scope rearward with .

So this scope isn't one piece?

Because people are different thats why we have adjustable cheek rests, adj length of pulls etc. people feel the need because thats where it needs to be for them to get a proper sight picture without strainig. If it works for you great,it did not for me and many others as its quite a common topic with theses scopes.

Doesn't appear to be!

Re: IOR SH edition owners

Thanks to all for the input on the glass. Looking forward to getting the glass in getting my rig up & running. For those that were wondering, glass is going on an Armalite AR 30 in .338 LM. This is my first Lapua I have inbound and looking forward to putting the set-up through it's paces in the near future.

Thanks again to all!

Re: IOR SH edition owners

I've heard from a credible source here on the hide that ring height plays a role in assisting the more forward mounting position that this scope favors.
It looks to me that the Savage has lower rings which might make this mounting position more critical.
Too bad IOR insisted on the 6x power range that resulted in the turret housing being so far back. This scope might sit on one of my rifles if it were a 3x5 with a more conventional turret housing position, if, that is, it was a 'known good' in the dependability dept.

Re: IOR SH edition owners

i second what Ratbert said, John is a very big man (nice as can be) but i wouldnt want to be on the recieving end of a pissed off John. But i did get behind Johns AR10 with the IOR on it and i dont know wether him and i shoot an ar the same way but i didnt have any trouble getting a good sight picture, but then again the tip of nose always touches the charging handle.
