I am considering buying an IOR Spartan 2-12 mp-8 to put on my LMT MWS.
Inkeeping with the function of the rifle I am looking for something that does CQB to a fairly precise 10x or so.
I have a NF 2.5-10 now, but you can hardly see the cross hairs at 2.5.

I would like to hear opinions or suggestions. I also have a Leupold 3.5-10 LR, but it is heavier and power does not go as low as I would like.
Anyone have the IOR, if so can you use it CQB on 2x?
I might consider the USO1.5-6 but I have no experiance with them, and would prefer to have more top end
I have used the 1.5-5 MK4 leupold and like it alot up close.

Thanks

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

Two things come to mind when you mention that scope, because I've looked at it before. The Spartan has a BDC knob, and I don't think you can get it in any other value, like mil or moa. That was a huge downside to me, since it only allows you to adjust in increments of the BDC and then hold off from there for more precision. Also, you mention your Leupold being heavier, IORs are heavy! I bet that 2-12 weighs more than the Leupy.

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

good point about the weight. with that 35mm tube it looks petite.

It weighs 4.5 oz MORE than the mk4 3.5-10

I did buy a 1 o' clock offset mount for a mini red dot, but it just is clunkier than I am used to.

I think I might just run the Leupold 3.5-10 on a Larue Mount and have use my Aimpoint if i have time to switch to a CQB type purpose
Thanks

Samurai-
On the IOR

how was the eye relief?
did it change alot on the extreme ranges?
besides the weight (and the BDC knob) was it suitable for a 16" quick pointing rifle?

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

Well, there's a 1-8 leupold you can buy for 4k hahaha. Eventually IOR will have a 1-10 out (I saw the thing a year ago at a gun show they were selling for 2200 I think) but until that time comes the scope you are talking about doesn't really exist.

USO has a 1.8-10 but I don't think it'll do anything that your NF won't and they are somewhat expensive.

I would stick with the NF; if you want FFP then think about a super sniper 3-9 it'll give you roughly the same service as your NF for half the price...

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

I couldn't bring myself to buy one, that BDC knob is a no-go for me, so I couldn't tell you about the eye relief. If you feel like being a guinea pig there is another option, but it's not very well tested. The combination you're talking about is a compromise, but this might be the best you can do for the moment.

March 1-10

From what I've read you'll lose a little bit on the top end, as far as clarity around the edges, but it just might work.

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

Thanks BCP, I know i want it all. Even with the discount, the Leupold 1.1-8 is 3k.
Thats alot of capability but ALL my money.
I'll run two scopes and hope i dont get caught with the wrong one! at least until prices come down on this broad range type!

for the record, something 1.5-8 would be fine if it was usable at both ends. my only prob with the NF is the crosshairs are to hard to see for quick stuff. FOV is good enough at low power, and no complaints at 10x
Thanks for the info on the March, I was not aware of those. Will look into them

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

I have a spartan on a 14.5" POF308 and love the BDC knob. I have a nightforce 5.5-22 on a 300WSM I also like a lot and for a short time had it on the 308. The eye relief throughout magnification is excellent on the IOR.
I really like the BDC knob for quick long range (out to about 600 yds is 90% of its use and it is spot on) shots. For really precise longer range shots (out to 1000 yds) and different loads I appreciate the nightforce, but for what I use my semi-auto 308 for it works awesome. No need to have to remember or tape the numbers to the stock, just a quick dial and I'm good. For me it is the PERFECT scope on my 308.
Just depends on how you are going to use it. I primarily shoot steel with the 308, and rarely shoot past 6-650 but have shot to 800 with it.

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

that is what I need it for, just wanted it to do the close range stuff too
thanks NFoley. so that might be it.
I almost never shoot past 400 and have a dedicated bolt gun for more precision

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

tsavo303,

I don't have the Spartan 2-12 but I do have a couple IOR 1.5-8's with the .308 BDC. It works great for 77 gr .223's, 110 gr 6.8 SPC's and .308's out to 500 yards. As nfoley said, the BDC is spot on. I am really looking forward to the IOR 1-10, but the 1.5-8 has served me well for its intended application. Scott @ Liberty Optics provided great service on these and I highly recommend him.

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

The Spartan comes with a 1/4 moa adjustment capped turrets with mp8 reticle. I've been looking to buy one for my 308 semi auto. And just like most of you guys was turned off because of the BDC knob.
Whatever you buy I wish you good luck and please report back on your experience.

Re: IOR spartan 2-12 for MWS Optic?

Just to clarify that last statement the spartan does not come with capped turrets (I believe there is a 2-12X IOR with capped turrets but not the Spartan). And the elevation turret is not 1/4 MOA - it is a BDC with yardages from 100-800 yds with stops at 50yd increments. To sight in takes a little more work than conventional turrets (loosen two screws and slowly adjust until sighted in at 100yds).
And the reticle is the mp8 dot or the CQB. I highly recommend the mp8 dot - I really like this reticle a lot!

My mistake I was looking at the 2-12x32 which is the one with capped turrets.
