Please forgive my following question due to that I am new with bolt action and long distance. I couldn't think of a better place to ask than here where the professionals are. I recently bought a remington 700 sps tactical .308 with bull barrel. Due to having a new addition to my family I can no longer spend money on quality scope. I was wondering if iron sights of any type would fit my stick. Later on I would like to keep the iron sights as back up if my scope was to lose zero, crack, or etc. Any one with advice it is welcomed.

Re: Irong sights

Not sure what type of irons you want...some of them can cost a mint. If I were you, I would peruse the for sale section and buy a used "Super Sniper 10X" they should go for around 250-350 depending on condition. They are solid scopes. Definitely the best for the money. I had one and only sold it when I purchased my USO ST-10. Example link is below.

Re: Irong sights

palma shooting is iron precision work. I would google palma and your rifle type but by the time you fit iron you will exceed the used SS cost.
swfa has these for $99 they have been reviewed in the hide somewhere.

they sound fairly decent and will allow you to get started
here is a mounting system for $32
swfa sells these as well IIRC but google failed me.
about $150 ish will get you over this cash hump for now.
good luck

Re: Irong sights

hi you can do a bit pof work and fit a set of AR type sights to your rifle but it will cost you more than a cheeper scope. otherwise you could get factory rem sights but they would need to be modified as the heavy barrels dont come with sights and then have to get the barrel drilled and tapped ending up with a poor excuse for a sighting system at a high cost.
but if you want a gohst ring sight set the XS systems ones would be your best option still will need the front sight fitted but can get a weaver base mounted rear that can be used lated with QD mounts for backup.

Hope this helps

Re: Irong sights

Badbot,

Thanks for the info and link. Nice setup for the price it seems. Funds will be a little low till the wife gets back working so this works great.

Wild_Bill,

Exactly what I was looking for. Something for now and for back up.

Thank you both for the help. Semper Fi

Re: Irong sights

Look up 'Oldeyes" on this site (User List, above), also check out Champion's Choice.

The value and cost inherent in acquiring real competition micrometer sights, etc. is in the precision and reliability. I would think long and hard about that cost when contemplating buying something as a stopgap to serve until glass is available.

If you're going to buy an interim sighting system, and unless you're seriously planning a significant foray into Palma, etc., applications that are exclusively the domain of the Iron Sight Heroes (no disrespect intended, rather; it's a term of utmost respect on my part), then I suggest it's maybe better to compromise and buy an optical sight system that will serve, albeit with less 'gravitas' than the quality scope.

You can get right into the fray, and when you get the necessary buckage to upgrade, the more plebian scope can still serve adequately on a rimfire trainer, which is another absolutely necessary complement to the precison shooting ensemble, IMHO.

I own 4 of the Tasco VAR624X42M Varmint/Target Scopes. All the requisite features in a lower grade, lower cost package. Mine ran $79.00 apiece, and they do the job in a satisfactory manner. I tend to tempt the Devil and use them in applications that make me put a lot of faith in a modest implement, but so far, I like them (after going on 6 years).

Re: Irong sights

You can buy a receiver sight that would fit the receiver and you could solder on a front sight. But you are still getting into a good bit of money. Probably over $100.

If money is that tight then I would consider selling the rifle and purchasing a rifle that already has the sights installed. If hunting is the direction you are going then I would look at a good quality lever action that is comparatively valued.

What type of shooting are you wanting to do??

By the way there is nothing wrong with shooting and hunting with a good quality rifle with a good set of open sights. Open sights work very well. The problem is that it is becoming a "lost art". Over 1/2 of my rifles are open sighted. And I enjoy shooting them more than the most advanced scope models. It takes real skill to shoot with irons. And it is a basic skill that all rifleman should learn, but few do.

Actually the best elk hunter I have ever met hunts with an open sighted Reminton Model 700 BDL with stock factory sights in 270. That guy can "lay em down". He has been hunting and shooting with the same rifle(I think he is on his third barrel) for well over 30 years. He is a true Rifleman. Tom.

Re: Irong sights

HOGGHEAD,
I have considered trading or selling the rifle for one for hunting purposes. When I bought the rifle my wife was not preggo, and since my daughter is due on Thursday it will be a little time till finances are in order enough to build a LR rifle. Basically I jumped in over my head bc I wanted it now. With my wife not being able to working for almost 2 months and the newborn I won't be able to spend like I would like. If you know anyone interested in trading or buying it let me know. Also, I agree with your thoughts on open sights.

Re: Irong sights

I am not sure what part of TN you are in. But there is a ton of gun shops in TN. I would just take my rifle shopping with me until I found someone who would trade with me for what I wanted to buy. Spend a little time in the shops, you should be able to find a good hunting rifle with good sights. Tom.
