I can't seem to find anywhere that lists what the Remington 700 SPS Tactical barrel is made from. I assume it's stainless steel, but I'd like to know for sure. Anybody happen to know what they are made with?
Re: Is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical Barrel Stainless??
Go check with Remington. My 700P is carbon. I think the SPS is Stainless. My opinion is worthless. However, my carbon steel barrel made in 1992 still shoots under 2 inches at 400 yards. FWIW
Re: Is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical Barrel Stainless??
Oh, and by the way...if you want to confirm the diagnosis...find a bare spot of steel on the barrel...under the stock or whatever, and try a bit of cold blue stuff on it. If if turns dark...it ain't stainless. If it don't...then it is.
Re: Is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical Barrel Stainless??
There is an SPS Sporter model that is stainless. All the SPS' with heavy barrels are chromoly steel. If you want a stainless heavy barrel look at the 5R's or XCR's.
Re: Is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical Barrel Stainless??
If you wanna know about a metal you need its number, not the generic name given to a bunch of them, 4150 is a chromoly, not all chromoly is 4150. Carbon steel means it ain't stainless, nothing more. Your SPS Tac is not stainless, it will rust, readily, thanks to the matte bluing's ability to hold onto moisture salts and other corrosives.
