Gunsmithing Is it OK to remove a action from a beded stock?

Months ago I asked someone if it would be ok and they seemed like they didn't like the idea.

I want to know your views on doing so? I'd like to be able to check the work of the smith to see the bedding job ect after my rifle is back.

If removing the barreled action from a bedded stock was bad for it, gunsmiths wouldn't bother removing them after bedding.

I will say that you must use care when removing and replacing the action. The action will most likely be a very close fit to the bedding, so must be lifted straight up and put back together with the same care.

Yes you can, and it's ok to do. Just properly torque the action screws when you go back with it.

There was a great photo posted on the hide a few years ago. Some military armorer had taken a sharpie and written a warning on the stock underneath the barrel. It read something to the effect-"if you can read this, put the MF back together and see the armorer"

As has been said, yes you can remove the action from the bedding; you just want to do it as infrequently as possible.

You *might* consider skim bedding the action when you return it to the stock. (This is what I had done to my M1A match rifle when I had it rebarreled.) This is just a very very thin coat of bedding compound applied over the existing bedding before the action is returned and torqued back down. Don't forget to use lots and lots of release agent. Otherwise, you'll end up with a glued action, which some shooters actually do deliberately.
