I have always assumed that the WSM actions were just a standard short action. But the other day I noticed while ordering a base that the manufacturer listed SA and WSM action. Is there some difference that I don't know about. I ordered a stock from manners the other day and specified mod. 70 SA. Will this work or do I need to call them back and tell them WSM action?

From what I know, which isn't a whole lot the only difference is the bolt face on the action. You will want a short action with a magnum bolt face for the WSM.

I believe there are some minor differences in the bolt stop as well, which allows the bolt to come rearward a little more than the non-magnum version.

The action screw spacing is the same between the SA and the WSM action at 7 1/8". There are three different trigger guards / bottom metals depending on the rifle that you have. Two piece, one piece and detachable magazine. Be sure that Manners knows which one you have. If it where me I would call them up and verify that they are going to cut the correct inlet for your rifle.

Where the difference lies in the actions is the bolt face diameter, ejection port opening and the screw hole spacing for the scope bases. (The FN short actions use the same base weather it is a 308 or a WSM.)

To figure out which action you have measure from the rear of the receiver and center to center of the holes.

WSM will be: 1st to 2nd hole - .860 1st to 3rd hole - 4.379 1st to 4th hole - 5.239 mount length - 5.802

SA will be: 1st to 2nd hole - .860 1st to 3rd hole - 4.119 1st to 4th hole - 4.979 Length of mount - 5.812

Thanks for the input here guys, I can breathe a little easier now. The action I'm working with here is a "classic" that was chambered in 300wsm and I'm sending it off to GAP to rebarrel in 7WSM. I did specify to manners that I was using PTG one piece bottom metal. So with all the info given here I think I'm ok.
