Is this AR a good buy?

I have the opportunity to pick up a LNIB - slightly used, less than 50 rds through it - Remington R-15. Comes with hard case, manual, and one mag. It's the model with the fixed buttstock and an 18" barrel.

$850, looks new and I know the guy that owns it.

Re: Is this AR a good buy?

It depends on what you want the rifle for. Doing a quick search on R-15s, that seems to be an OK price for them.

For me, the camo finish doesn't really have any appeal, I would swap the handguards, and the lack of a threaded barrel would be a non-starter.

Personally, I wouldn't buy it for $650 because of the reasons above. However, if it would meets whatever requirements you have, I say go for it.

Re: Is this AR a good buy?

I don't really have any concerns with the rifle's quality or performance. I just wanted to know if it's a good buy in today's market.

However, 50APIT got me to thinking. It's not exactly what I would want in an ar.

I used to have a mid-length RRA that I changed a bit. Kept it for awhile then sold it. I only used the rifle for going to the range and plinking. Even though I reload, an m&p 15-22 is still exponentially more economical to shoot in regards to plinking. So I sold the RRA and bought the m&p.

I'm getting the desire to buy another, but to be honest this time around I was thinking why buy another 5.56? I already have 2 bolt guns in .223. A model 70 for hunting and a model 700 tac for target/range.

If I were to build an AR I would prefer a mid-length or rifle-length gas system. Really, an 18" stainless barrel with a rifle length system would be perfect.

I also was considering - like I mentioned - something different. Maybe the 300 Blackout, or 6.8, or one of the 6mms, or the 20 practical. Whatever I get I would prefer it to be on the .223 case head for ease or reloading and hopefully can use regular 556 mags.

Thoughts? If I bought one it could be for hunting and for fun. Hunting = hogs, deer, and coyotes.

Thanks

Re: Is this AR a good buy?

Sounds like you'll want to make some changes to it and with that I would say don't buy a gun because it's a good deal(which this one seems ok). Start from scratch and get what you want.

Re: Is this AR a good buy?

I agree, if you want all those things than dont buy it, build or buy something else. I stipped the camo off mine and am happy with the .223, sounds like you want something different than what that rifle is.

Re: Is this AR a good buy?

Y'all are right. I am going to pass. I don't think he will have a hard time selling it locally anyway.

Now I need to research and decide which caliber to get. I've looked briefly at the 6mm/556 but it seems that you can get that kind of performance out of the 556 by using the heavier bullets. That's just from a glance - not in depth.
