I have a Suunto Core and the elevation does not ever seem to be right. Yesterday I went over a mountain pass and pulled over at the top to set the correct elevation. Two hours later I went over the pass again and checked it and sure enough is was off by like 800 feet.
Is this normal? The barometric pressure is always very close to my Kestrel.

Re: Is your Suunto elevation ever correct?

Fuck no! I sent my first Vector in because it wouldn't hold elevation. They sent me a new one in return and it's a bit better but still not consistant.

Otherwise not a bad watch but not my favorite for cost.

Re: Is your Suunto elevation ever correct?

How far is the elevation off?
Most of that type equipment uses standard pressure to come up with Elevation, if you were able to get a current reference pressure, it would most likley come up with the proper elevation, when working correctly.
Good luck,
Scott

Re: Is your Suunto elevation ever correct?

Mine's usually within a couple hundred feet depending on reference pressure and the weather.. I sat behind a pilot once in Afghanistan and watching his altimeter my Vector tracked within 50ft from 6000-14,000ft and then back down again. It's never perfect but it gets me close enough in most cases.

Re: Is your Suunto elevation ever correct?

I have the Core and when I take the time to set the reference values it's usually accurate. For your situation if your Core is in the altimeter profile, your altitude is changing and the barometer is changing it could provide an incorrect reading. Suunto recommends that if the weather is constantly changing the user should reset the current altitude reference value frequently.

Re: Is your Suunto elevation ever correct?

At times from 1200' up to 2000' off. I figured it went off of the air pressure but the barometric pressure is right on. I've had it about 6 months I guess I'll look up customer service and see what they say. Something is off in the price, reputation, and end results ratio.

mine's accurate as long as it's set right... nice help on land nav courses

my compass took a crap though, it only shows 330-050 no matter where I point
