My previous build was a 260 Rem built on a Savage 300 Win Mag Long Action. It shoots well, but now I'm getting bored again. I would like to build something on a Savage short action now - but what? I shoot mostly paper out to 300 yards. I'm looking for something very accurate - do I just screw a 6mmBR barrel (or something similiar) on to the long action, or build from the ground up? Switching barrels sorta defeats the accuracy I worked so hard to get on the 260 - and I could always use another rifle anyways. I may take it out to 500 yards occasionally, but moybe only a few times a year - 300 is about max. So chime in people - what say yee?

Mostly 300yds? Hard to eff up going with a 308. Easy recoil, insane barrel life, cheaper reloading supplies....just to name a few percs.

If your looking for something different you could put together a .22lr. They are inexpensive to shoot and can be reasonably accurate. Additionally, it seems like something that would be new to you.

I disagree about the part where switching barrels wastes any part of your effort. If anything, it should make it all the more worthwhile.
To me the best part about a switch barrel gun is how it allows one to spend the money for the best firearm components, only needing to do it the once, and use them for a multitude of applications. All that's needed is another barrel to run the new appication. With the Savage, once the original barrel is off (that's the only really hard part), a barrel swap takes but a few minutes.
The most significant limitation would be the boltface diameter.

This build has heavy barreled, 1-8 twist, .223 written all over it.
Cheapest thing there is to reload in the rifle world, very accurate and just plain fun.

You have me thinking now. Have you built a switch barrel rifle? If so, are you finding the swapping of barrels to yield the results you ask for?
My platform is built on a SSS Stock, using a Savage Long Action and DBM. Using calibers like the 6mmbr, I would probably need to single feed it, don't know how they would feed from a long action mag configured for the 30-06 round (bolt head I swapped to the 30-06 / 308 family - mag is a LA 30-06 mag which fits the 260 prefectly - again same head size - no issues feeding at all). Don't know how this would affect the much shorted 6BR cartridge though. Guess I could try.
I originally wanted a SA, but the price was so good on the LA I bought it and built it on that. I already have a Savage 10FP in 308 which is insanely accurate, as is my 223 12BVSS. Both I hand load for BTW. I'm now looking to work on somehting else.
You may be right - pick up a barrel, screw it on and give it a try. I used a Shilene barrel for the 260, although the ones you showed were a little cheaper. Decisions, decisions decisions....

My rifle is based on a 10FP. It has been upgraded with an L-W 260 barrel, a McMillan A3, Sharpshooter trigger and recoil lug, and 20MOA base. The barrel has been swapped once, by a friend, but the task is simple enough that even I could probably do it without a lot of fuss. I use a single feed mag follower. Barrels on the wish list include 22-250, .280, and .30-'06. Money's tight but the barrels are getting higher on the list. As an L-W customer, I'm completely satisfied.
As for .223, I completely agree, with the Savage, it's just a barrel and bolt head replacement.
