Gap base model and a TRG22. I do know that both are excellent choices, but what I don't know is what I lose/gain by making either choice. I suspect the TRG proprietary parts are more expensive. I've also considered a Remington SPS tactical, but I'm afraid by the time I'm done upgrading, the price wont be that far off from the GAP or trg22 (I understand the buy once cry once philosophy).

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

well i propose a solution buy a trg and send it to gap and have it rebarreled you can have the best of both worlds.

if it helps i own the trg 22 and absolutely love it. make sure you like 2 stage triggers though because that is the only option available on the trg.

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

One big thing to consider is wait time, you can have the TRG tomarrow if you really want, the GAP will take quite a bit longer.

If it were me and you can endure the wait I'd get the GAP.

You can have them build it EXACTLY the way you want it and it will be "your" rifle just how you wanted it not a factory rifle.

Don't get me wrong the TRG is a very nice and accurite rifle and if you need the rifle pretty soon I'd go with it anyday of the week but I personaly like the custom rifles more.

Both are excellent choices though.

Shoot more, wait less.

Besides, you cant take money with you, so all you've got is your time and your experiences.

TRG-22

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

Go with the TRG unless you are going to build with better than Remington 700 action. Surgeon etc... Having had some issues with custom 700 like the bolt handle breaking off, go with something better. my 2 cents Z

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

I'm with Crazydonkey, you can hands down build off of a 700 platform for a lot less than the GAP, or TRG. On the other hand, if I could stand the wait, I would would be all over having GAP build me a new rifle.

okay explain and show example

donor rifle $350
custom adj. stock $700ish
bedding $100
quality trigger $200ish
barrel blank $300
chamber install $200
badger dbm $330
true action $150
bolt knob $60

total $2390+shipping and this doesn't include coating. honestly if you can get it done cheaper than that you should probably be alittle concerned about them cutting corners.

or you could just spend alittle more and gap or a trg hmmmm not a tough choice for me.

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

One Ooher thing to condsider in the cheaper 700 build equation, as compared say to GAP, is the resale value of you decide to sell it. You may pay more for a top notch known big name smith/shop like GAP on the front end but your gun will be worth much more and more sellable later. This true even if your cheaper build from a "no name" smith is of comparable quality. That is a just fact, same goes for custom 1911 builds as well, the big names sell alot faster and retain their value.

Had my smith recomended to me by a member on here, called him told him what I wanted(same things i told the other 2) he priced it at $2100 and it would be done in 3 months. I don't shoot groups but it shoots very well, was a great deal cheaper than everyone else, was a good deal faster than everyone else and I really like the guys who built it and they will get all of my future business.

Like I said, just because someone isn't a big name on this forum or in the tactical shooting match world does not mean they can't build a rifle that shoots for a lower price than everyone else.

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

Don't waste money on a trigger, bottom metal, bolt knob and "coating", and that build price comes down to $1800. That is the versatility of the custom rifle.

Having said that, if I had the money, I'd get a TRG. But I don't.

In the end, it's still a prettied up 700. I'd spend a little more and get a purpose built rifle from the factory.

Edit: although, if the TRG was out in .260 when I bought my other rifle I probably would have got one.

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

I've never heard a bad thing about a TRG, but they are pricey. There are plenty of top notch custom rifle makers out there that can build a rifle to your specs for less than the TRG. Having said that, order the GAP!

Re: I've narrowed it down between the..

TRG-22 is less than the GAP base rifle ($2700 vs. $2800), just wanted to bring it up as the way people are talking it doesn't seem like they realize this.

I've realized that. That's why when I went to find an upgraded rifle, I chose the TRG-22. One outstanding rifle, IMO.
