Just saw this tonight. It's pretty good Leo's performance of Hoover is quite remarkable at times. The movie goes a little in depth throughout Hoover's life and shows his rise to fall. Yet of his 48yrs of service it's not enough for 2hrs and 20minutes to cover. Also there were certain topics that weren't touched other than a 5 minute scene, like JFK's assassination. I know Clint wanted to keep it from being another "JFK" and all but there needed to be more on it. Also Dillenger's apprehension wasn't shown, just mentioned, if i'm not mistaken it also helped the FBI set their quality and work effort in stone. Didn't like the Homo parts, but i guess that was part of it. Judi Dench doesn't quite fit the role of hoover's mother either. Not because of her acting, but i can't get over the british accent in the mist of Hoover's american accent it just doesn't fit. Overall a solid movie, just overwhelmed by the amount of history and information of the character it's portraying.

    Re: J. Edgar

I just re-read Personal and Confidential, the biography of J. Edgar Hoover. Interesting book, which doesn't paint Hoover in a great light.

But my biggest takeaway was that sometimes great things come from flawed people... The author contends that "The FBI would have happened with or without Hoover." But I am not so sure. He shepharded that organization into a pretty amazing entity.

The book is definitely worth a read and I think the film is largely based on the events first outlined in that c. 1991 book.

I have always loved watching "The FBI Story." Total propoganda, but made in a time when we still enjoyed things that glorified American Institutions... and didn't just look to rip them up.

    Cheers and Merry Christmas, all!
