"On the 6th of December 2019, the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced that they would adopt a new pistol, the Heckler and Koch SFP9 for the Japanese Self Defense Forces (JSDF). This marks the first time the SFP9 has been adopted by a national military; prior it was only bought by police organizations. The SFP9 is slated to replace the Minebea P9, a license produced variant of the SIG P220.

From the Japanese MoD’s Fiscal Year 2018 budget, we know that the H&K SFP9 competed against the Glock 17 and Beretta APX. Given the recent dominance of Glock at winning contracts worldwide, H&K’s win comes at a small surprise. But a look into Japanese small arms training provides a possible reason why."

JSDF originally was meant to be just a limited civilian police force, with a constabulary armed with nothing more than rifles. That was the original terms decreed by the Allied forces after the surrender of the IJA in 1945.

Cold War politics, and the threat of communist invasions and internal unrest sparked by communist sleeper cells changed that. Today the JSDF is a bonafide military entity with substantial wartime experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, as JSDF units have also been part of the coalition effort from 2001 to 2013. Very recently, they have started a relatively successful recruiting drive aimed at getting the younger members of the video game generation off of their feet and into a military career. In one of these attempts, an anime series titled Gate was made, featuring a modern JSDF-SF expeditionary force entering a fantasy medieval European world via a portal, defeating bad guys and rescuing damsels in distress, while also procuring resources and raw materials for a fledgling Japanese superpower state. The anime had received some criticism from reviewers in South Korea and China, citing the material as propaganda for a new wave of Japanese imperialist aggression. However, the story was expanded to feature both the ROK and the PRC as well as the United States as co-belligerents in the new universe. The series also unveiled many of the latest generation hi-tech military gear used by the JSDF.

One second you are sitting down to a meal, unaware of the pistol you got on your hip. The next second, your balls are blown off...

The Imperial Japanese Army in China have been well known to ditch their Nambu's as soon as they got their hands on the far superior Brownings and Mauser C-96/712's carried by Chinese troops.
