Hey fellow hide members,
I have a JC higgins MDL 50 in 30-06 im looking to fix up for my son. the problem i'm having is finding a replacement stock. It was my grandmothers hunting gun and the stock was cut down for her but it is now to short for him. Also need a base and rings. I have looked all over sinclair/brownells and not finding much. Any suggestions? Great gun, FN action with a chrome lined barrel that is still in great shape. I will say I do get a laugh when he shoots it and scopes himself!!

I think the Higgins Model 50 is basically a Mauser 98 action (FN commercial Mauser) so replacement stocks should be pretty easy to find.

These guys show the original style stock with buttplate & grip cap as out of stock right now, but you might give them a call, not sure how up to date their website is...

its just a commecial 98 action. they are really good guns generally. the guys over at 24 hourcampfire will be alot more familiar than the guys around here.

ggarrett, I saw that out of stock too, thanks. I have not been ably to find much about this other then folks saying that there under valued, don't care about that crap. This stick has been in the family since new and will be a great hunting rifle for my son, his son and so-on. I am going to do the timney trigger/safety upgrade, don't care for the flip type. Sent a email to Boyds gunstocks he shows a few. I'm thinking $350-400 and this will be one hellva hunting rig. and that is cheaper then anything new.

Hidesert, Thanks for the info, I will check them out! I new that this was a reach on the hide, but there is a ton of good guys here that seem willing to help.

This is by far the best stock made for the Mauser.

Standard Mauser 98 stock with whatever fancy stuff you might want to add.
It's a fine action.

Wouldn't it be great if those who have nothing constructive to say would just keep their mouths shut? A genuine warning would suffice. Getting kicked in the nuts sucks but its still funny as hell. Hope your son is O.K. and still likes shooting with Dad.

Jeff, I think I am going synthetic just for the durability factor, but I am curious as to the base and rings.

My son's situation did not occur from a rifle hitting him in the face. Just trying to save you some pain and a lifetime of knowing you caused a permanent injury to a loved one because you thought it was humorous.

I mean it's only your son right? I have seen mine close to death twice. I prefer to do all I can to prevent others from experiencing that.
