I'm not completely familiar with the PTR-91 series, but have some with the G3. Reliable, battle rifle accurate (don't expect precision), and kinda dirty. Oh, and if you reload, don't feed it your good stuff.....fluted chamber. Oh, and CHEAP mags. Which is a good thing given the price of ammo. lol

Owned one for about 2 years. Put a couple thousand rounds down the pipe. I would say that it is a damn reliable battle rifle, but as db_17_85 said, I wouldn't expect to shoot tiny groups with it. It ate everything I ever threw at it including steel cased wolf and several varieties of mil surp. Not a single FTF or FTE, but again, couldnt really get better than MOA as far as accuracy.
The fit and finish was decent. Even coatings all around and smooth welds. The original plastics (stock and forend) felt pretty cheap though.
As for mods, there is quite a bit out there. I added a Magpul PRS2 (G3 version), Brugger & Thomet picatinny scope base, SWFA SS 3-9x, and a G3 wide forend modded to utilize a Harris Bipod. Most parts made for the HK-91/G3/CETME/MSG-90 will be compatible and drop-in. Mags are dirt cheap for it.
Parts can be found in abundance at DSArms, hkparts.net, and other specialty HK vendors.
If you plan to scope it, I highly recommend a buttstock with an adjustable comb as I could never get a proper cheekweld with the stock unit.
The worst thing about it for me was the trigger. I sent it out to Bill Springfield (http://www.triggerwork.net/) and it was much improved.
Overall it was a fun rifle but I didn't find myself shooting it as much as I thought I would. Gotta love the "HK slap" to the forward charging handle though...

You will need some kind of picatinny base or HK Claw mount to mount any kind of optics on the PTR. For telescopic sights, you may need to remove the rear sight or use a riser. I preferred to remove the sight to get the scope lower. I believe I used Badger High rings to get enough clearance for the objective but this will depend on your scope. You also need to make sure to choose a scope that isn't too long and doesn't interfere with the charging handle. You'll need to do some measuring but it isn't impossible. If you choose to add optics, you should definitely upgrade the stock to an adjustable unit.

I have one and it's a fun rifle. The iron sights are very easy to use and it shoots smaller groups with surplus ammo than my M1A Scout can. The downsides in my experience are the quirky ergonomics and it being so front-heavy, but it's a great range toy and I've had zero problems with it.

Years ago I owned a HK-91 that I foolishly sold. Three years ago I wanted to replace my HK but didn't want to spend $3,000 on one so I picked up a PTR-91.
JLD is the original maker of these American made HK clones. They use HK licensed equipment from Portugal and they are a very good copy. The JLD guns are known as very reliable and about as close to an HK as you can get. In 2005 they became PTR-91 Inc and there were problems with the flutes in the barrels not being cut to the proper depth. This will cause malfunctions when shooting certain types of surplus ammunition that has been sealed with tar, South African being the most notorious. The guns in question will have an AW prefix to the serial number and from what I've been able to research start around AW1600. Fortunately I have AW12XX and mine has been reliable with everything I have fed through it. I've read that recent production guns are GTG with all surplus. I typically get 1.5-2 MOA accuracy with it depending on ammunition, not bad for a battle rifle but not for precision work.

Great rifle ~ 98.975% as good as the original except the price.
One thing some of the older ones had an issue with certain ammo due to fluting of chamber.
I haven't had any problem and mine shoots everything.
I sent my trigger group to Bill Springfield and it shoots even better.
BONUS: the mags are CHEAP (price not quality).

I have posted pretty extensively on my own experiences with the PTR-91 series of rifles and other HK clones in the past. If you run a search of the forum using my user name and "PTR" in the search box over the last few years, you should turn up lots of info.
I have also built custom rifles using JLD receivers/flats (such as an MSG-90 clone).
Have a look through my old posts and if you have any addt'l questions, shoot me a PM and I'll do my best to hep you out if I can.

My serial number is A33XX. It does not have a W in it. It is a lot of fun to shoot and I usually shoot the cheap box ammo from my gun shop. I haven't had any feeding problems. It seems to be a real reliable gun. Thanks for all the replies.

I have AW21XX and shoot it not that often but enough to enjoy it. As far as I have been able to tell the parts are Rhinemetal (Spelling Wrong), HK, and US.
All I ever changed was the buffer assembly to the 2 stage. It may or may not have changed things. My HK has a 2 stage also so I don't really know.
Has shot and bent the case on every thing I put through it, I need an ejection port buffer...
